1. Weepy bullshit. I missed my dog terribly, wrote an emailed eulogy for him, and went to work.
The author should get over the fact that "other people fail to recognize the depth of your loss."

6. You decry the author stating "other people fail to recognize the depth of your loss" by calling it
 "Weepy bullshit"

That's some irony, m'dear.

He quoted the author.

You're a little light on the uinderstanding of the word irony, m'whore.

cause we're not married....just living in sin for the past 9 years. I wasn't going to let my guy go back to the midwest alone....so I had to take vacation.

And I'm wondering if the gay gentleman that I work with will get any time off if and when his partner dies. Most likely NOT

It's 2011....let's all get with the program.

Years ago when one of my cats died unexpectedly, I still had to go to work the next morning.

I told people I had lost a "friend". They were so sympathetic until they found out it was really my cat. Then they made fun of me.

pipi_k, that was wrong of them and your co-workers were jerks.  Worse than jerks.  See, all of us horrible evil conservative people over at this cave love our animals, too.  We grieve together when one of us loses one of them.  I literally cry for each one.

I have always loved my animals, but I don't think I'd skip work to mourn.  That's just me.

George Carlin had a great line about pets...paraphrasing...the best part about when a pet dies is you get to get a new one.  And it'll love you just as much as the last one.

When the cat I had since I was 5 years old passed away, I still went into work.  I was 18 years old by that point.  It was a really sad day.  I was the only person in our family that he would cuddle with every night.  Never for a second did I think about calling in "sick" that day though.

Losing a pet is tough, my condolences.

When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Before my cat died he had been acting really weird for a couple of days (hiding in dark places, not eating, not purring) so I asked my brother to take him to the vet while I was at work.  That afternoon I got a phone call that it appeared to be advanced cancer and the vet was recommending a couple test to rule out more benign causes, and then the recommendation was to put him to sleep.  I told my boss what was going on, and took the rest of the day as a sick day.  We put him to sleep that evening. She completely understood.

I was teary the next day at work, but I was there.

A few years ago I received a call from my boyfriend on my way into work.  He was at the vet, with Gypsy his 18 y/o chow, and they were going to put her down so I could be there too.  I called my boss, explained the situation and said I would be late.  She told me to take the whole day.  I thought that was really nice.

My little old lady herding dog, Ruby, died a few months ago. She was almost 16 and worked until the day she died. It's what she lived for and I couldn't stop her, even if she was well behind the herd. And she was my agility partner. She was my son's soccer buddy growing up. He taught the damn dog to score a goal with her nose and she scored on some of the best defenders in the state. He'd bring her out after his games. She was so obsessed that as she got older we had to hide the soccer balls because she had arthritis and still wouldn't slow down. We even buried her with Jake's world cup soccer ball from the 94 world cup autographed by a few of the players (he had the good fortune to play for the club owned by Clive Charles who was the men's coach at the time and the kids occasionally got to watch them practice and kick the ball around with them).

I couldn't even write a "cryin' in my beer" post because I was so sad but it was a peaceful passing. I didn't do much of anything on the Internet for a few days, even though and that's a big part of my outlet out here in the sticks since my husband's gone all week. And I still have farm chores. Life went on. We let pets into our hearts knowing full well they'll give us unconditional love & companionship but that they'll die before we do and will hurt. It's still not like losing a child or spouse or even a sibling.

I had to call the boss for some time off when I had my mare put down. I had to be at work in two hours and I was still waiting on the vet at that point. He said to just take the day off and get things taken care of.

When we had to put Puffer to sleep a couple of weeks ago, I had to be at work 2 hrs later. I was a bit weepy and distracted, but I was there, calling in to not work was not an option if I wanted to keep the job.

Sobbed when I got home though.

I worked the morning of the day we buried my mother...did the same thing the day we buried my father. I had a business to run and it was the busiest time when they passed on. My younger sister, the baby and drama queen who had been given everything she and her husband had by my parents, made quite a scene about me working and not being around every day, all day for three days. My mother and father would have been spinning in their caskets if they could have known I wasn't working. They would have fully understood me working because that's how they had been able to give the drama queen all the material things she had.

Oh, I have shed a few tears over some old dogs in my time but missing work because of their death was not an option.

I can understand taking the day off after an animal dies.  I remember when my dog Mutt died.  He was my walking, hunting, fishing, and camping partner when nothing else on the planet wanted a thing to do with me.  He was bitten by a cottonmouth when we were deep in the woods.
