Lesbian couple asked to reverse shirt at Dollywood
By Associated Press
Tuesday, July 26, 2011 - Added 6 minutes ago

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A lesbian couple is asking for changes at Dollywood after an employee asked one of the women to turn her T-shirt reading "marriage is so gay" inside-out to avoid offending others on a recent visit to the Tennessee theme park complex.

Olivier Odom and Jennifer Tipton said Tuesday they want the park to be more inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender families after Odom was asked to reverse her shirt when they visited Dollywood Splash Country next to the Pigeon Forge amusement park. The story was first reported by WBIR-TV in Knoxville.

I thought you weren't allowed to say, "That's so gay..." Wanda Sykes said we should knock it off.

It is a tasteless shirt that may offend some people, especially people who would patron Dollywood.

I agree that the shirt is tasteless, but come on. We live in America. We have freedom of speech. That's like saying you can't wear a Cardinals jersey in Cincinnati or a Yankee jersey in Boston, or a Jesus Didn't Tap shirt anywhere. It's only offensive if you let it be.

The Sykes reference is hilarious though. It is hypocritical.

The government was not doing the censoring, it was private property.   Feel free to wear a Yankee shirt in Boston to go bar hopping.

Being the t-shirt was so provocative, I have to wonder if they really went there to enjoy the day at an amusement park or if they actually wanted to provoke something.

I think they wanted to provoke.

Don't ever wear a Yankee's jersey in Boston.   You check your Constitutional rights with Yankee loving crap at the CT border.    :censored:

Agreed.

They never said they had to leave, just asked them to reverse the shirt.    The shirt has no rights that I am aware of.

You may be completely right, but I am confused. I thought freedom of speech extended to things like shirts as long as the government didn't deem them offensive. I remember the Maplethorpe art display coming to Cincy and people tried to get it banned (20yrs ago?), but couldn't. I think it was under freedom of speech that they won. The art museum that showed it was a publicly funded art museum.

I also thought that any private company could not discriminate. I am not a lawyer, but I have watched blacks win court rulings to get into private golf clubs, ect.....That's why I thought that this would end up in a court battle.

Like I said, I don't know the law as much as others, but if I wear a Reds shirt to a bar in St. Louis and get kicked out because of that only, I think that is a bit much.

Just a question, because I can see this turning ugly. Does Dollywood have an anti-gay policy? If so, and its legal, then I agree they should be kicked out or turn their shirt inside out. If not......what is legal and what's not?

All I see is a costly court battle that isn't good for business. They should have claimed another reason to kick them out or just had "plain clothed" employees advise them that it wouldn't be good to keep the shirt on.

I agree that Dollywood should be able to do what they want, but gays are a protected catagory. This will cost someone.

And that is exactly why they did it.  Maybe Dollywood will get a sympathetic jury/judge.  I wonder what the response would be if some guy walked into a lesbo bar wearing something like this.

Wow talk about biting the hand that feeds you...

Dolly Parton has always being strong in the LGBT field...   Someone needs to clue these two munchers into the 411 that Dolly created that little amusement park to create jobs for hillfolk, and that Dolly has always been very gracious to teh gais...

Sometimes I feel like they have to "announce" that they're gay, when it's quite obvious...."woohoo, look at me, I'm gay, I'm gay"... I don't get it.  Who cares? Do your thing, but don't throw it in my face. mkay?

Those two should be wearing "I'm so ugly" T-shirts.

I would hope the lesbian community would be inclusive of heterosexual males with an adolescent  sense of humor.

They are Duke, some, not all, have one heck of a sense of humor, these are the gals that have little mental problems about who or what they are.

Seems to me that the most stable people I know be they straight or bent are those that have no problem with themselves or others.

Polish jokes, Italian jokes, Black jokes, Irish jokes only offend the the outsiders, as they may in fact cause concern that the jokes may turn on them.

What offends people is way too often a sign of who and what they themselves are.

The bent couple were obviously looking for a reaction from the shirt one of them wore.   So they got what they expected, turned the shirt inside out and went on to have a fun day.

This was not the deal in LA. where the man was beaten half to death for wearing the wrong shirt to the Dodgers game.

I am not going to speak for them, but I would imagine they would ask any type of offensive shirt to be reversed or not worn in their park.   Just because this shirt is pro-gay, doesn't necessarily give it protection.   The couple was not asked to leave.  The shirt was not welcome.  They can't separate the two for some reason.
