Bachmann tops Iowa Power Rankings as straw poll looms
« on: July 25, 2011, 11:10:56 PM »
Ron Paul ranks second, Pawlenty 'significantly slipping'

Editor’s note: Throughout each presidential campaign and caucus, our sister site, the Iowa Independent, asks an array of pundits, campaign workers and scholars to prognosticate on the changing prospects for caucus hopefuls. The newest edition of the 2012 Power Rankings is the last before the famed Ames Straw Poll:

With only a few weeks to go before several 2012 candidates face off in the Ames Straw Poll, the world is about to see who has best balanced the game of Hawkeye State momentum and expectations.

These opinions and predictions have been culled from our staff members, additional state political reporters, party activists, academics, elected officials, political consultants and other insiders. While unscientific, the ranks provide insights that cannot be garnered in traditional polling or from any one pundit as to a candidate’s organizational strength in Iowa.

For our ninth edition of Power Rankings (and our last in advance of the Ames Straw Poll), here’s how we think the 2012 caucuses would end if they were held tonight:

Even if I didn't like her, which I do, Bachmann stands head and shoulders above the others. IMHO.

Bachmann is the best of the bunch at this juncture. We will see how she holds up in the debates. Just say no to Romney.

The field is generally pretty slim by the time my State's primary comes up; not saying pro or con on it, just my analysis, but I think Bachmann will do very well in Iowa and knock out a lot of the backfield, but it'll be the high water mark for her and she probably will be well back (If still around at all) by the time my own primary happens.  My gut feeling is if Perry gets in it, it'll be between him and Romney by then.

If it's between Perry and Romney when it gets to Illinois, my vote goes to Perry.

Assuming that happens, who do you and the others here prefer? I don't want either of them, but I don't want Romney more than I don't want Perry.

Between the two, I'd pick Perry.  There's just something about Romney I find particularly difficult to trust, I can't put my finger on exactly what it is though.  Yeah, I know, it isn't analytic, it's a "Spidey-sense" kinda thing from a career of working with human snakes.

I still think Sarah Palin is the (pink) elephant in the room. I know all the arguments against her, but when I look at her history and the kind of person she is my gut just says she's the right person (Palin/West is my dream team). Polls (even straw ones) mean absolutely nothing regardless of who you support but I doubt Bachmann has a chance this time around and according to many Palin doesn't either but that's what primaries are for and this will all sort itself out. I don't know that the two of them could run together and win but that would be pretty awesome. I'd love, love, love to see Bachmann regardless of who becomes president, as AG because cleaning up Holder's mess is going to take someone with very high moral character and a sharp legal mind. Holder has helped me remember how extremely important justice is to the fate of our country.

It does take time to gain the name recognition, though, especially if you come from the relative obscurity of the House of Representatives. Considering how the media and the left (but I repeat myself) are, by the time they're through she'll look like Fred Phelps' bastard cousin. While my first choice is Palin and my NO choice is Romney I really want someone with executive experience. I consider effectiveness more important than "time served" and include Cain in that category because I don't think experience needs to be in the government. And West. Military experience makes an incredible leader.

To be honest, I simply don't know enough about her to make a decision. Has she run a business? Was it successful? What was her role in it? What's her political history? What's her tenure in the congress been like? What committees has she chaired? Legislative history? How was she viewed by the foster parent system in her state? Is she still close to her foster children? She does say she RAISED 23, which indicates to me rather long-term relationships. My aunt & uncle are in the foster program and usually don't have their children more than 6-18 months and don't consider themselves "raising" these kids though they smother them with love and affection (most desperately need it), their role is mainly to provide a stable, safe place for them. I'm sure most of this info is available I'm just not ready for this full blown campaign stuff yet.

Some of those running/might be running are so well known we don't need a history of their life this time around. I absolutely do not expect political perfection. The things I've heard about Perry make him a kind of mixed bag for me. No one is going to vote the way I want every time. No one is exempt from having made boneheaded decisions. I am concerned about some decisions she's made in her campaign thus far but again, I don't expect perfection and as long as someone is honest and forthcoming about WHY they make their choices I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. And I'm suspect of anyone who's selling themselves as perfectly passing a political litmus test because that's how 0bama was sold to the country last time around. Any "pretty boy" the establishment is trying to push on us is pretty much a no vote for me. They have no more love for the republic than the left and I'm sick to death of establishment crap.

The Boehner Plan, from what's I've read.  He caved quickly to support it.  What does that mean in terms of galactic time?  Your guess is as good as mine!

Which Boehner plan?  I think there have been about 3 of them now.

Cindy, I like Sarah Palin and believe she has been vastly underestimated by the establishments of both parties, but if she's gonna run, she needs to get off her cute little behind and say so plainly, or she won't be anything but a spoiler for Bachmann.

You need to realize the district he's in. There are a TON of elderly and the Democrats have been playing the "you're gonna lose your SS and not be paid because West is for default". The Republicans aren't doing a good enough job of telling these naive f'n idiots that YOU WON'T LOSE SHIT. Austerity measures won't have a DAMN thing to do with people currently on SS.

..and he didn't cave "quickly". He can only do so much. If he's not getting the RNC to start countering this shit, it's gonna happen to others as well. Democrats are good at one thing, organizing. Conservatives are good at one thing, individualism. It's time to start playing their f'n game.
