Links for Parents

As requested by dixiebelle, a list of links for parents to educational standards for school subjects:

Each teacher should know their content area standards, and should be able to provide examples of how their daily lessons AND unit plans correspond to these national standards. Also, each state also has standards for each content area; just google your state and content area standards and you'll get to what the expect each kid in each grade to know. Beautiful! Thank you so much! I have bookmarked these and also have my school district's lesson plans for the year. My problem is the liberal spin and editorializing the teacher does. grrr...

Yeah, that really bugs me as well. It's more prevalent in the social studies area, but as you can clearly tell from discussions elsewhere on this board, it manages to sneak into all sorts of places. :)

If you really want to hear what the teacher is doing, have your kid tape record the lectures. They will have to ask permission to do so, but if you (as a parent) make a big enough stink about it, they'll have to let the lectures be taped. If they really don't want to, and your kid has not-so-stellar grades, use the whole "I think it will help him when it comes to test time" excuse. If your kid has a learning disability, the teacher HAS to let them tape the lecture. Any teacher worth their salt and concerned about their students would let them tape the lectures.
