Japan Wins World Cup On Penalties After 2-2 Thriller

Source: MSNBC

FRANKFURT, Germany - Japan claimed its first Women's World Cup title after beating the United States on penalty kicks Sunday.

The U.S. missed its first three penalty kicks, while goalkeeper Hope Solo could only save one goal. Japan won when it made its fourth attempt.

Team USA had dominated much of the final, outshooting Japan by a 29-12 margin and a 6-3 margin on goal. But two shots have gone off the post, another went over the crossbar and Japan's goalkeeper made a terrific save on a fourth.

I was rooting for the USA, but I'm happy to see Japan win.

Then it starts......

First, accusation of USA being sore losers.....

5. I was not rooting for the USA, but for Japan although I didn't think they'd win.

I'm not into this "we need to be #1" stuff in sports. It's nice that the people of Japan have something good to feel about even for a short time.

28. The U.S. players were taller, stronger, and maybe faster

but the ball is the same size for everyone. Scrappy Japanese ladies proved it today.

Happy celebration. :toast:

23. I was secretly cheering for Japan --

Their country need this win much more than we did, plain and simple. They played a great game and deserved their win. :applause:

26. To echo liberation, It Was a Fantastic Game! Solo and the others

played so well (maybe the defense had some problems...)

Japan won the shoot out against an injured Solo after a 30 minute overtime. Unfortunate, but both teams can hold their heads high.

Too bad US media can't seem to drum up any enthusiasm for women's soccer.

But then of course US media sucks in so many ways...

Americans don't particularly like/watch soccer for many reasons but it's the media's fault?  Sure, DUmbass, whatever you say.   :whatever:

Sure, if ESPN would just make Americans watch a full soccer snoozefest match, the NFL would immediately have to fold.

Or as I say, "Soccer--the game for kids with no game."  Where are those orange slices and juice boxes, dammit?  These kids practice HARD and pretending to be hit and flopping around on the ground!

Basically, and I'm not saying anyone threw the game, but deep down you knew the US was going to lose when ESPN kept flashing that "22-0-3" graphic, and the interviews were all about how all the Japanese team members were playing for SOMEONE they knew affected by the earthquake/tsunami.  Granted, it's good that they have a little bright spot in what otherwise has been a total shit year so far, but ease up on the heartstrings/scrappy underdog bit, would ya ESPN?

And with that, I flipped over to the race up in Loudon.  No way in hell I was going to fight 2-lane traffic to actually watch it in person, mind you.

I'm not much of a soccer fan, but if the US is involved in any international competition no matter the sport, how can you not root for them?  I'm not talking about flag-waving, face-painting & stuff like that...I just hope they win.

Kinda un-American of the DUmmies if you ask me, which isn't exactly earth-shattering news.

Kickball is appropriate for women, not men.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Huh, we were in the World Cup? Who knew?

Agreed.  I don't really care what the sport is - we should always root for the USA to win.  End of story.

I watched the late stages of the match after baseball. They lost on PKs, no excuse for that. I will not address the disgusting anti-Americanism b/c it doesn't surprise me.
