I had a short conversation with a colleague the other day that reminded me why I love Arab culture.

I had a five-minute phone conversation with a doctor who works for our community health service. He's an oncological gynecologist, a doctor who specializes in treating ovarian and uterine cancers. Well, one of my patients came to me in tears because her own gynecologist diagnosed her with a low-grade squamous epithelial abnormality caused by the human papilloma virus. Fancy medical talk for saying she has a small chance of contracting vaginal cancer.

She had a hysterectomy years ago due to non-cancerous reasons. And now, her gynecologist (who doesn't sound as if he has a very good bed-side manner) just told her bluntly that she was going to get cancer of the vaginal wall. Well, I was a little taken aback by all this. First of all, this patient of mine is very emotionally fragile to begin with; she has been evaluated several times at my clinic for suicidal feelings; plus, physically, she's already a train wreck. I was very upset at her gynecologist for not being a little more sensitive to her emotional state.

My assistant recommended that I call our oncological gynecologist, who just happens to be her step-father, and see what he could do. He's this Arab-American guy in his late seventies who is still healthy and strong, and has no interest in retiring from his practice. Keep in mind, I had never spoken with or even met this doctor before.

His end of the conversation? Basically this, nearly word-for-word: "Well, please send this poor woman to me. I will make sure she is well cared-for. I will obtain an endometrial sample for testing, and this I will do for the wonderful Doctor Bob!"

It was this courtly, gentlemanly manner that he had, coupled with an Arabic lilt to his English, and being able to obtain proper care for my frightened patient, that just made me feel great inside. This job has its rewards. God is great.

On someone who had a hysterectomy? You could biopsy the vaginal cuff, but no uterus = no endometrium, unless they left something behind they shouldn't have.

Please notice the alleged physician primitive describes the Arab-American "colleague" as in his late 70s.

It's not the "Arab-American culture" of the ancient gentleman the alleged physician primitive so admires; it's that the guy was a physician during a time and era when physicians were much different from how they are now. It's the Norman Rockwell "old family physician" attitude, not the ethnic attitude.

And probably the Arab-American ancient's been in the United States since a boy or something.

I didn't row over to read it, Frank, but I would not conclude from the excerpts that the OP is actually a physician. Though he does as much as possible to create that impression, he does not actually say so in so many words, which is something to which my BS detector is carefully attuned after many years of experience with posers trying to pass as qualified professionals.

From the content, the poster could just as easily be a much lower-status medical worker such as a counselor or psychologist with a mere masters degree, a nurse, or even a paramedic with a bad case of know-it-all. When one of them actually owns a high-status professional license, they are usually at great pains to state that fact explicitly at the earliest opportunity.

Why wouldn't any good leftist love "Arab culture"? Just look at how progressive they are, they allow gay marriage, they allow abortion, women have all kinds of rights, they are champions of religious tolerance as well. Yep Arab countries are certainly a liberal Mecca.

Damn, the DUmmies take stupid to a new level everyday. Yet they hate Christians supposedly for doing the exact same things the Arabs do on a daily basis in their part of the world.

Well, yes, of course.

Authentic bona fide physicians, dentists, and attorneys don't have the time to hang around Skins's island as it is. And given the widespread reputation of Skins's island, if they actually had the time, probably they'd avoid it like the plague.

But my comment was directed more to that the guy was admiring the Norman Rockwell image than the Arab-American aspect of his "colleague." I'm sure that it's generally recognized that physicians in the Arab world aren't too kindly, too sensitive, to their patients, especially those of the female persuasion.

And you really have to admire their doctors, the way they can take a uterine biopsy on a woman who's had a hysterectomy. Hey, it's possible. Maybe the hysterectomy was done by a muzzie doctor. She still has a uterus, but her appendix is gone.

The best muzzies, though, are the ones we watch blow up on a Predator's video feed.
