The county in which we live banned smoking outdoors . . . .

. . . . in all county parks.

It was voted on by County Council tonight and it goes into effect when our county executive signs it tomorrow.

Well, DUDE, guess which side of the fence that came from.  HINT: a party you are PROUD to be in.

You have to laugh at businesses that have made their entire campus smoke-free...or so they wish.  The first thing they do is remove the butt containers, so now the butts get tossed everywhere.   ::)

When I went to school, (and NO, that was not when dinosaurs roamed the Earth!), not only did the HS have a designated smoking area, but in college, I had 2 courses where students SMOKED in class.

Today, you would be arrested for THINKING about bringing a tobacco product within 1000 yards of a school, business, playground, etc.

I remember smoking in movie theaters.  Before it was banned completely some of the theaters made their balconies into Smoking Lounges.

I quit a 2 pack a day habit that I had for damn near 30 years. It's been 12 years now.

I haven't had a drink in 19 years. (Damn you woman)

I'm proud to say I have no vices.  O-)

I read the thread, Stinky only posted once in it after dropping the steamer OP.  Neither post actually indicates whether he is pro or con on the law.  No wonder the Dude's posts get unrecced so often.

16. I am a former smoker . . . . some odd things since quitting . . . .

. . . first, I still get cravings. Rare. But right out of the blue. Very intense, but they only last a second or two. I am about four years quit.

. . . I vowed to never be a smoke nazi. I have been able to stay true to that.

. . . while I am no smoke nazi, I am completely repulsed by second hand smoke or smoke on someone's breath. I can even smell it when driving and following a car with open windows and a smoker inside.

. . . I am neither excited by, nor unhappy with, this new local law. My own world is completely devoid of smoke so it matters little to me.

4 years, Dude?  Bullshit!!!!!

Smoking was not allowed at my school in the 70's, getting caught with cigarettes meant a 1 day suspension.  However, students would stand across the street and smoke in plain view of faculty members without getting in trouble. Teachers, could smoke in their lounge.

That was a big difference between high school and college. In high school, you could be suspended from football for being caught taking a smoke. In college, half the people in class were smoking during the lecture, and the auditoriums had ashtrays built into the seat backs.

I even remember once in college P.E. we had to run laps in a gym, and on one side the track ran behind a set of bleachers. There would always be a half dozen guys running who would take a smoke break under the bleachers. The instructor never seemed to mind.

No matter how you feel about smoking, that's an example of how personal liberties are chipped away incrementally over a long period of time.
Every little bit, that seems inconsequential or even a good idea at the time, can never be regained, and adds up eventually to a lot.

The fact that you had to pay a Town Fee to live there (AKA the Privilege of Living in Columbia Fee) was an immediate red flag to me. The HOA is bad enough, thank you.

HoCo is chock-full of liberal transplants that aren't rich enough to live in Montgomery County. (I'm from MoCo originally, so of course I'm biased.) They labor under the delusion that they are Washingtonians, when in fact they are a suburb of Baltimore and are, as such, Baltimorons.

In the 2004 election, Maryland went to Kerry only because HoCo, MoCo, and Baltimore City have the most densely populated areas in the state, and all are lib havens. Every other county in MD was blue.

According to a 2007 estimate, the median income for a household in the CDP was $103,464, and the median income for a family was $120,064. Males had a median income of $63,938 versus $41,721 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $29,287. About 2.2% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.3% of those under age 18 and 4.9% of those age 65 or over.

Ellicott City is at present part of Maryland's 7th congressional district, currently represented by Democrat Elijah Cummings.

Of course, that's reported income.

Same here, but for different reason.

It involves my step-son, his ex-wife, and the f'ed up, so called "judicial system" of Wocomaco County.

Let's just say the cops there are so crooked, they have to screw their hats on, and the judges are worse.  After I personally witnessed a cop perjure himself during testimony, and the judge overruling the defense attorney, I wouldn't piss on Maryland if it was on fire.

Hell, the damn judge was so addled, he was sentencing a man to 6 months in jail, who was there to be released!
