Doesn't surprise me though. That's how momma cats move their kittens and when you pick a kitten up by the scruff, it goes still as a statue. Didn't know it would work on bigger cats. Of course, if I tried it on mine, he'd kill me in my sleep.

I am going to try it later on one of my cats.  The other would most likely leave me a bloody mess of shredded skin and hair.

Mine only have back claws...but they sure know how to use them!! We tried that neck grabbing thing with ours when we tried to put them in a big canvas kennel thing when we moved last September. We were able to get three of them in without too many claw marks. Took M & T's arms and chests over a week to heal up from Bailey's shredding. She hissed at both of them for 2 days anytime they came near her.  :o

wife and I have to use thick heavy gloves to handle him. last year I took her to the ER. he ripped her forearm pretty bad.

None of mine have front claws but it hasn't stopped them from being holy terrors anyway. :-)

Did you have them de-clawed (obviously) and at what age?  I have a Siamese that isn't too keen on having his nails clipped, I have to do this at least every 2 weeks, and I'm getting a little nervous that I may be into this for the next 20 years!  I've heard that de-clawing is, well, inhumane....just looking for an easy out here  :p

My first two cats, were strays who had been dropped at the vet's) were about 6 months old when I had them de-clawed. Back then (about 25 yrs ago) vets waited until cats came into their first "season" to spay them and that was when I had them de-clawed.

The 4 I have now(from the shelter), were all spayed when babies (they had to weigh 1.5lbs), and I had to wait about a week for them to reach the weight. I picked them up the next day after their surgery. Took them straight to the vet, had them de-clawed and got them the next day.

They did much better with their paws than the older ones did. I used a different vet and she didn't remove any part of the "pads"....the other vet took the tips of the pads too, which had to have been more painful.   :(

Thanks debk, that's pretty much what I have been told.  Do it young and don't touch the pads.  My Si is pretty bad, 1 1/2 yrs old and I don't think putting him through this will help his demeaner at all.  Time to invest in some long leather gloves.  With kevlar.

Don't forget to protect your chest and legs too!

The kitters I first had, I would have to cut their back nails. It was never a pretty sight.

The ones now...I've never had to cut their nails. They nibble on them quite a bit, probably just to make sure they are very sharp! :o  but they do keep them fairly short.

As soon as I'd adopt one from the pound I'd schedule the declawing the same time they were going in for neuter/spay.  A few of my adoptees already were fixed, so I'd just schedule the declawing.  It costs more in the short term, since adoption fees aren't going to cover declawing, but in the long run it's saved my furniture and vet bills based on injuries sustained clawing one another while fighting.  My cats still fight but can never manage to inflict much damage without front claws.  Since they all live inside it doesn't matter that they can't cope with the outdoors.

Declawing has many, many critics, and I've actually had some "activists" get in my face at a party or other casual setting about how I'm torturing my cats.  Yeah, as I always retort, I'm sure my kitties would've preferred I left them at the pound and perhaps gassed, as long as they kept their claws.  Geez, I get that declawing isn't for everyone, but my kitties didn't feel much pain that I know of-nowadays you can pay the vet extra and keep them doped up for three days and by then they're perfectly recovered from any pain.

In the long run, I would think declawing your Siamese would be less traumatic than fighting over getting his nails clipped constantly. 

As for the behavior of my cats, pre and post declawing, I didn't notice any difference in their basic personalities.  Over the past 8 years since we started adopting cats I've had at least a dozen declawed...some have moved on to the Rainbow Bridge, but the seven running around here seem happy.

When I was looking for a companion for Sabrina before we lost her....I went to a place that was a shelter, but not the county shelter.

I was given an application to fill out, and one of the questions was would I de-claw the cat. I answered yes.

When I handed the application back...this girl just went off on me!!! Loudly!! What a cruel person I was, an animal hater, etc. Told me never to darken their door again as I was unqualified to have one of their animals!!

I was stunned. I couldn't believe how she talked to me.

Told her I'd be sure to let my 19 yo declawed cat know what an abuser I was.

The county shelter didn't care...they were just thrilled I was willing to adopt 3 at one time.

I just used this method to trim my cats nails. Worked like a charm. Next I'll try it for trimming snarls.

Ive always trimmed my cats claws since I was a kid. (They were indoor/outdoor cats)

Now, I just get the front paws declawed. Theyre indoor cats anyways now.

I've never had any kind of pet (dog or cat) but the big liberal whoodoo is that you're cutting off bones, like decapitating a regular person by cutting off their feet or hands.

I'm not sure I buy that, but the declawing argument I've heard sounds somewhat uncomfortable.  I'm still undecided on it.
