Ridiculous as this seems, it's a true story.  She's growing organic vegetables, not marijuana for cripessake.

From the article:

Bass' cool garden has landed her in hot water with the City of Oak Park. Code enforcement gave her a warning, then a ticket and now she's been charged with a misdemeanor.

"That's not what we want to see in a front yard," said Oak Park City Planner Kevin Rulkowski.

Why? The city is pointing to a code that says a front yard has to have suitable, live, plant material. The big question is what's "suitable?"

I got my "eperimental garden" in the yard. I've got a couple cucumber plants, several okra plants, 21 tomato plants, peppers, zucinni and 2 75' rows consisting of 1 row of peas and 1 row of lima beans. I have not hoed, plowed or pulled grass from it all summer. I work it with a lawn mower and a weed eater. I may do more next summer.

It's been dry as all get out here so I haven't had much trouble with grass in my regular garden either.

...and I'm fix'n to go pick my first purple peas out in the yard. :-)

Someone, please correct me if I am wrong but is it not Detroit that is heavily pushing urban gardening for its residents in these tough times? Oak Park is part of greater Detroit. Does the Utopia of Oak Park have no crime for its esteemed leaders to focus on? What's the foul here? I don't get it. In the People's Republik of Michiganstan shouldn't this woman be lauded, even showcased for her emulation of the First Lady's efforts and advice to garden?

What do these Oak Park city government types think their town is, "Mayfield", Beaver Cleaver's hometown?
Unreal. I'll bet the law drove past at least half a dozen crack houses and a dead hooker on their way to serve the summons.

Why would vegetables not qualify for suitable live plant material. Anyone seen squash blossoms...they're beautiful. And all that green foliage interspersed with beautiful read tomatoes, the changing colors of peppers, dark purple eggplant, crooknecks, lemon cucumbers, cauliflower, broccoli, the beauty if vines, tall cornstalks, pole beans & peas winding up a tepee, the lacy green of tomato leaves. I think vegetable gardens are just as beautiful as perennials.

I have zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, and cucumbers.  Beautiful and green.  Not one nothing on all of em.  Too dang hot.  I did get enough cucumbers to pickle a few jars, and had enough zucchini for one meal.  I keep watering, hoping maybe something will give me something.   :bawl:

Currently working on my hydroponic system for my sunroom, so I won't have this problem going forward.

Leave my garden alone or I'll give you a reason to send me to jail!
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

I think vegetables qualify as suitable live plant material moreso than City Planner Rulkowski.  What a dillweed.  Must have a corn cob stuck up his behind.

Wouldn't surprise me at all, but then, it takes a real brave person to deliver a summons to a renegade vegetable lady.  They probably thought she might spray them with Raid. :whatever:

Smells like a bit of communism to me. Glenn Beck made this call about a year or so ago on his show. Reminds me of the cops arresting little kids for running a lemonade stand.

Seriously, what could you possibly do in the Detroit metro area that would actually LOWER property values?

Not much.  Letting loose a few nukes in that war zone can only improve things.
