Wife and I walked into a nice restaurant, sat down and started looking at the menu. The picture of a menu item looked pretty good (baked salmon), and I was hungry. I ordered it. Long story short, the order came and the salmon was 1/3 the size of the one in the menu. On the way home I started thinking that I ordered something I didn't get. I should have questioned the size of the fish compared to the size of the one in the menu. Have any of you out there had that experience? or thought about something like this after you left a restaurant?

9. Restaurants are cutting back on portion size -  - due to the economy. Food prices going up and not as many can afford to eat out. I've noticed it and have heard others talk about it, too.

They need to change their menu picture to be more representative of what they're serving.

14. For what I have seen, portion sizes have gone down substantially.

I have noticed this trend getting worse. Also, the quality of the food have suffered (IMO). For example, P.F. Changs used to give much bigger portions. I used to enjoy my "Sweet Tomatoes" salad buffet but I have not gone back. I noticed there is less selection and the ingredients look... "watered down" or of low quality.

I don't mind the portion sizes however, I do mind "ingredient selection". Now, I cook at home much more often and hardly eat out. I still get my Chipotle fix every once in a while.

27. the nicer (more expensive) the restaurant, the smaller the portions...

Of course they will tell you it is the "quality" of the food or that these are the Chef's "artistry" that you are paying for.

So, I guess we'd all be the proper weight, if we could all eat all our meals at 5-star restaurants. If only..

29. Actually, that started a few decades ago when chefs in upscale restaurants noticed that they were losing business. Talking to their customers, who are mostly rich and slim, they discovered that the patrons didn't really want hugh portions but tasty morsels so they wouldn't gain weight. The restaurant owners, of course, were delighted in the profits it would bring and the movement caught on in even less than four star establishments.

However, in the case of the OP, he saw what he was supposed to get on a picture on the menu and didn't get what he ordered. He has a right to complain.

28. I was waiting for political ending - how it reminded you of Obama's campaign menu and what you got delivered on your plate after he was sworn in.

Total  bullshit.
Go into a Golden Corral and you'll see the entire DUmp population from your area.
No change in portion size at Golden Corral.

I'm sure any woman that took unknowingly romanced a DUmp male knows exactly how demosincebirth feels.

If I am going to eat out, I would much rather pay more, than pay the same and get lower quality ingredients.  A couple of places around here I used to eat at have kept their prices the same, but markedly lowered the quality of their food, so I stopped going.

I do know that one of them has since closed down.  Looks like I'm not the only one that thinks this way.

If you want larger portions go to Burger King and super size.

Comrade Demosincebirth, it sounds almost as if you are criticizing Lady Obama's "Defeat obesity by austerity and a special storm assault on portion size" health program, but surely that could not be the case for a true loyal Democrat Party member, now could it?

It didn't look like the salmon in the picture.  Whatever.  I think demosincebirth is just doing some rationalizing to justify not leaving a tip.

The nice restaurants I go to don't have pictures of the food on the menu.

Busted. Chili's and Friday's have some food pictures. Restaurants any nicer do not.
You don't get a big slab of salmon for $6.95 at Monday Margarita Madness.

First off....If the menu has pictures of the serving, It'a a Denny's, a Perkins or a Bob Evans.

Not exactly a five star resturant. Tho' the food is decent at all three.

Fun Fact: The Big Mac shown in photos and on TV is actually to big to fit in the box.

I say the DUmmy in question was there applying for a job. He was looking at the menu display behind the counter. If he gets the job, he'll notice that the cash register has pictures on it as well to help those taking the order that had 12 years of public education and can't read.

Any of the perhaps 6 places that I have dined at with Gourmet food has never had large serving of anything.

Screw that crap, I pay for food not for 3 Asparagus and sauce over a silver dollar size Fillet Minone  with some spice artfully placed about the plate.   Price $60.00 per dinner.

Where are the smashed potatoes and gravy, whats with these baby potatoes the size of a malt ball covered in some kind of sauce with 3 small caped mushrooms ????  House cheap wine at $10.00+ a glass---------

It is said that if one dines at an Asian restaurant that within an hour or so they are hungry.     I'll go for that over these places, all so fancy dancy with dress codes and 2 month reservation that leave you hungry and poor before you walk out the door.

Give me an old time steak and chop restaurant, 8-16 oz steaks and chops, lots of potatoes fried or baked, smashed , with gravy are good, fried veggies and a big salad  with little greens with garlic sticks.

Sea food, an Asian Buffet where they have king crab legs, bowls of melted butter not those one ounce melted butter from restaurants that cause you to keep asking the waiter to bring you more.

In the South I want Chicken fried pork chops with white gravy, greens and mashed potatoes.

In the far north I want french fries with gravy, fried mushrooms, and a ground pork hamburger with all the fixens.    Stewed tomatoes Without sugar or bread-- with crackers and butter.

In the Polish comunity, chicken soup poured over boiled potatoes, Kielbasa and  hard boiled eggs.

Then there are the NC. BBQ of pulled pork, coleslaw and green hot sauce on a bun-------found at most any small shop.

Fried Okra, and boiled peanuts, --------People are nuts to head for the outrageous restaurants when the side of the road clam shacks in New Englind or the south not to forget some wonderful Mexican small shops  are as good if not better then of these OOH-LA-LA places that cannot satisfy a hungry person.

The restaurant business was hit hard by the economy. But it was not that people were ordering less food. It is the wine/spirits. No one is going out and ordering that $100 bottle of wine anymore. They are going for the $20-30 bottle.
Besides I would rather pay for a smaller portion of wonderful than a huge portion of nothing special. If I order the tasting menu at the French Laundry or Le Bernadin I know it is going to be a small portion but I know it is going to be the best available.

DUmmie was at one of those "All You Can Eat" fish camps...and the fish wasn't 1/3 the size of the one in the picture. The DUmmie had asked for a plate 3 times the size of the one used for the picture ...so they gave the DUmmie the galvanized trashcan lid.
