Anyone notice that the market is up over 600 points this week?

5.2% increase in the Dow in the last week, the market was up every day, over 160 points today alone. It suggests to me that 'investors' expect the Republicans to cave on the debt increase.

I have noticed you're a moron but what do i know?  :whatever:

The moron part is true enough but I think his assessment of the Stock Market is all wrong. It's up because it appears that the adults may have finally returned home from vacation.

Surely the senile old atheist, who like all men nightly pitches his tent one day's march nearer the mausoleum, is jesting.

I think it suggests investors expect Republicans to not cave in.

While I haven't checked volume on the market lately.... I suspect low volume is the reason. Institutional investors like mutual funds with 401k, 457k ties put money in the market on a regular basis. Usually around mid month and at the end when people get paid. It's the other investors that determine volume. Low volume + money coming in from the institutional investors = higher market. The other investors are all sunning themselves at the beach.

Now I ain't no wall street guru but I did stay at a holiday in last nite.  :-)

The National Public Radio website, on "All Things Considered," alleged the stock market rise was due to the government in Greece standing firm on budget cuts there, and a "slight" rise in manufacturing jobs in Chicago.

Huh?

That's enough to send the stock market up?

July 1 is the beginning of the second half of the year, or the beginning of the third quarter, and I suspect it's just the usual end-of-the-quarter or end-of-the-half year house-cleaning that in this case caused a temporary climb.

It suggests to me that 'investors' are going to participate in some profit taking in the coming days/weeks.  But the ThomWV primitive need not concern himself, nor should any of the other islanders since primitives, in general, barely have two nickels to rub together  anyway and are nothing but observers of the system they despise.

13. It makes us Retirees who bothered to save and invest during their working years good too.

So what's up with that? I thought he was dirt poor, living on his meager SS up some holler in West by God Virginia and now he's telling us that he is invested in the market cause he saved for his retirement?

Hey Thom? Which is it boy? Either you got money or you don't. Either way... from one fellow WVian to another... you a liar.

Major Garrett said the other day that insiders are saying the market is going to crash in a few weeks, people are very nervous. It's like the calm before the storm.

Well now Frank you got me curious... so I went to CNBC and here is what they had to say:

Quote
Stocks closed sharply higher Friday to finish their best week almost two years following a stronger-than-expected manufacturing report that helped calm some doubts over the slowing recovery.

Stocks rallied all week on thin trading volume on the heels of a handful of positive economic news and over optimism that Greece's debt crisis would see a resolution.

When you have low trading volume, larger swings in the market happen.

How about the rise is the market righting itself after shedding hundreds of points over the last four weeks - but thats just me...

That is another possibility.

One thing I have learned over the years on my 401k is to invest on a regular basis and don't look at the market everyday. Rebalance once a year and be diversified in the mutual fund asset classes instead of chasing the hottest asset class at the moment.

20. I have dental care but after spending thousand I started pulling my own teeth
I have dental insurance, the Government plan that Congressmen have. The coverage is so poor that after spending several years and thousand of my own dollars trying to save my teeth I finally gave up and as they went bad I started pulling them myself. I did go to the local teaching hospital about 5 years ago to see what really needed to be done at that time. They wanted to pull everything that was left and the bill to me (after insurance had covered some piddling little bit) was still going to be nearly $3,000. So I said **** it.

By the way, I have kept all of my teeth, in a box. When they've all come out I'm going to drill holes through each of them and put them on a chain which I will then wear around my neck. Its my way of saying **** you to dentists.

23. Your story is tragic - should never happen. And you HAVE insurance!
Doesn't it hurt to pull your own teeth?? And if I may ask - how do you eat without teeth? Sorry you've had such a rough go of it.

50. Once again, you'd be surprised. I can't eat apples of course, but most things are OK
I do still have that bridge and several bottom teeth so I've got something to chew against. On the top I just gum it but you'd be surprised how tough your gums get after a couple of years. I do have a problem with sharp or crunch stuff stabbing my gums though, and that can really be painful - and of course once it happens there will be a cut on my gums that has to heal before I can eat "normally" again - but they heal surprisingly fast, a day or two at most.

I don't want to make this sound worse than it is. Since I abandoned Dentists I've had little pain or difficulty. What pain there has been has always been associated with a tooth that had become very mobile (lose) and I've pulled every one of them with just my fingers. I have to tell you the truth, most of them haven't hurt much at all to pull out.

44. No where near as bad as you might imagine
Now don't get me wrong, I didn't grab the vice grips and yank, for one thing virtually all of my teeth were loose to some extent and when I had to pull one it was one of them that all of a sudden was getting much looser. As for infection, I was just lucky - never had one.

As it stands right now I've got one tooth left up top and a bridge and about 5 left on the bottom. It was removing that last bit of mess that was going to cost me another three grand.

He pulls his own teeth because it's so darn awkward trying to hold that little mirror in one hand and a heavy DeWalt cordless drill in the other.

It makes filling cavities more trouble than it's worth.

Can you have one tooth and a bridge? I thought a bridge had to go from one place to another place. Is ThomWV less than honest?

OK, I noticed the bold. Was Thom a government employee or congressman?

Now usually any teeth insurance don't pay all that much... some more than others depending on the plan. The one I am in, Delta Dental, says you have to be in it for 3 years before they cover major expense. Now as for pulling the things, the dentist ain't gonna charge all that much and the dental plan will cover it. Hell Delta Dental covered my wisdom teeth removal, 4 of them, back about 13 years ago, and I had an oral surgeon do it. It was, IIRC, about $400. Dentist would have done it a lot cheaper but I was gonna get knocked out for that so went to the oral surgeon.

My dad had what was left of his teeth removed back in 2002 and got dentures. It wasn't the "thousands and then the $3000.00" on top of that to do it. I think it was a couple thousand for the whole deal, most being for the dentures and he had no insurance.

Thom... you a liar boy. From head to toe you a liar.

Probably shorted a lot of stuff . . .

Bally, I've been hearing about a massive crash for about three . . . years?  When it comes, and it will, it will be baaaaad.

I've been hearing that since I first got into the market in the late 70s, and it's always true. There will be a crash, there always is. If you can afford to ride it, you will eventually get well and make more money, unless you're caught up in a scam like the dot-com nonsense. If you have available cash and the stomach to invest when things look darkest during the crash, you can make a lot of money. If you try to guess the top or the bottom, you are almost sure to lose.

Exactly. Be diversified, invest over the long term on a consistent basis , when the market crashes put more money in it, and you will be alright. Now we are talking long term here... 30 plus years. When you get to the 10 yr time window, get conservative.

Dad always told me that whatever everyone else is doing in the market, you do the opposite. Great advice! Gotta have the stomach for it though.
