NYT Reports Gov. Cuomo About to Lift Ban on Fracking in NY

Just as New Jersey was looking like it was going to be the first state to ban fracking, neighboring New York appears to be about to make headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The New York Times reports:

The Cuomo administration is seeking to lift what has been, in effect, a moratorium on hydraulic fracturing, a controversial technology used to extract natural gas from shale, state environmental regulators said Thursday.

Administration officials are proposing to ban the process inside New York City's sprawling upstate watershed, as well as a watershed used by Syracuse, as well as underground water sources used by other cities and towns. By allowing the process in other parts of the state, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo would open up New York to one of the fastest-growing -- critics would say reckless -- areas of the energy industry.

I'm not sure I follow the reasoning here. I'm guessing that Cuomo thinks that fracking could be potentially damaging for our waterways, hence protecting the drinking water for New York City folks. So why would it then be OK to allow it to potentially contaminate the drinking water sources for New Yorkers who don't live in the big cities? Are rural residents (not to mention the farms they run to supply food for city folks) going to be collateral damage for more dirty energy?

Democracy for America is urging their members to get on the horn to Gov. Cuomo and I hope more of you will join their efforts. You can reach him at: (518) 474-8390.

Wait for it...

Wait, I thought Cuomo lifted the ban on fracking a few days ago!

At the link, there's a lousy freeper newbie troll over there trying to inject facts.  And physics and junk.

Increased industry in the state of New York?   :panic:

The easiest way to get them to change their tune is for a major conservative company to produce some spectacular, highly profitable alternate energy breakthroughs. Once their personal wind turbines and flexible solar panels all bear the Halliburton logo, or the Koch brothers get paid every time one is sold - they will be back to old, unpatented energy technologies.
