Peacetrain (1000+ posts) Fri Jun-24-11 08:19 PMOriginal message I need to stand up for my own.. Liberal Christians.. Not all people who are people of faith are kooks.. believe in creationism.. believe in discrimination..etc.. far from it.. just the opposite.People of faith have been on the front lines of change since day one. Yes we have sects and religious communities who are oppressive.. who limit women .. but that is not the whole religious community..just like all Iowans are not tea partiers.. But many tea partiers are Iowans ..As a liberal Christian, we are targeted by crazies who do not even understand the core of the religion they claim to be a part of.http://edition.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/07/28/church.shooting /And that is true for all faith bodies. We have had our commericals on TV..the mass media pulled them off in 2004 When we had a simple commerical that all people are welcome to the house of God. Yep that was threatening to mass media.http://wn.com/United_Church_of_Christ_UCC_Bouncer_TV_Ad We need to support the churches on the front line of social change.

bluestateguy (1000+ posts) Fri Jun-24-11 08:23 PMResponse to Original message 2. Liberal Christians are even ridiculed by people here at DU with athiest mockery about the "sky fairy" or the "invisible man in outer space" and other such rhetoric that mocks progressive people of faith who like to pray.

ashling (1000+ posts) Fri Jun-24-11 08:31 PMResponse to Reply #2 7. Evangelical atheists are as bad in their own way as evangelical Christians
Throd (1000+ posts) Fri Jun-24-11 08:55 PMResponse to Reply #2 14. I'm an atheist, but I think that type of derision is very weak-minded. Christians, like atheists, come in all stripes. Some are wonderful and caring people, some are hypocritical (or hypercritical) a-holes.Live and let live.
think (237 posts) Fri Jun-24-11 08:26 PMResponse to Original message 4. it is unfortunate that Christianity has been hijacked by religious zelots that Jesus would have called hypocrites and warned people about......
Peacetrain (1000+ posts) Fri Jun-24-11 08:32 PMResponse to Reply #4 8. Yes it is..When I hear someone like a Limbaugh pontificate on things that are 180 degrees opposite of Christian teachings of preference for the poor..which just goes to show, they have never read what they say promote.

Yes, too often it is forgotten that..Baptists, for instance, led the charge against slavery and became the largest pacifist group by the end of the 19th century.Catholics, for all we like to demonize them for some things we don't like, is one of the largest charitable providers on the planet. And so it goes-- with so many Christians of all denominations out there doing God's work that they don't have time to get on the news.

Kennah (1000+ posts) Fri Jun-24-11 08:47 PMResponse to Original message 12. One of my best friends is a devout, liberal Catholic One of his biggest crosses to bear, no pun intended, are the Catholics who profess Pro-Life equals Real Catholic. He sighs whenever he mentions it. I don't bring it up or rub his face in it. I'm sure he has callouses from all the FFPs.Being a recovering Southern Baptist, I launch into them all the time.I'm now an agnostic pantheist.
How can one be a Christian and not believe in creation?
Catholics, for all we like to demonize them for some things we don't like, is one of the largest charitable providers on the planet.
"The nation that couldn’t be conquered by foreign enemies has been conquered by its elected officials" odawg Free Republic in reference to the GOP Elites who are no difference than the Democrats

You'd be surprised at the answer.
We should support liberal Christians, stupid geniuses, democrat patriots, and vegan turkey vultures.
Yeah, "liberal" and "Christian" don't go together. It's not that they're contradictory. It's just that Christianity has no "ideology." Christianity is Christianity, pure and simple and nothing else.
