Cantilevered structures - how do they do that?

I am referring to at least one of the works of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright:

http://www.fzarpelon.com/?p=197

http://www.archdaily.com/60022/ad-classics-fallingwater... /

Or perhaps similar to this, but with longer roof (but no walls as shown) to form a quasi-indoors/outdoors space that can be screened in or used with shade cloth to keep direct sun off the area.

http://www.homedesignhome.com/concrete-house-by-sergio-... /

My question is: How do they do that? I have a friend who is a structural steel engineer who will draw up the plans but I would still like to know the inner workings of what's behind the stucco, etc.

Does anyone have a "for dummies" type explanation of how such structures are made (and made strong enough to withstand high winds which we do get here).

Help or advice much appreciated!

1. Here

http://www.pennridge.org/works/cantstruct.html

Visual clues as to how they work. No technical stuff.

2. Thanks for the link

It helped me visualize the different types of cantilevered structures.

I think I need to do more research to understand the "hidden" structural elements. I'm leaning toward a simplistic visualization: it's like a "T" shape with a support to hold the weight. But what keeps it from shifting over time or drooping when people stand right at the edge???

3. The size of the members determine the strength of the structure.

Here's a cantilevered structure to consider.

franksolich is a little peeved with Bozo of Baltimore, his literary critic, who apparently hasn't read his latest story, despite that it's been a hit here.  And Bozo of Baltimore's even mentioned in it, near the end.

Why is this DUmmie even looking at a house like this?  I thought according to them that you didn't need more than about 500 sq ft to live in.

You know, madam, I was really embarrassed.

I've heard of "cantilevered," but wasn't quite sure what it was.

I checked wikipedia, and all the questions the primitive who lit the campfire had, were answered there.

I think this was a thinly veiled excuse for the txlibdum primitive to crow about their building of a home to all the other primitives.

Uh huh.

The primitives do a lot of that.

But when I saw "cantilevered," I was thinking of something more like "flying buttress."

It's embarrassing when Bozo of Baltimore knows more about something than franksolich.

Any lurking mouth-breathers who may be of the illiterati persuasion can watch this simple video on how to master the art of handling their Government Issued homeless shelter Eco housing (under 500 sq ft) so they will have no troubles once it arrives.

This is architecture that is totally fascinating.

How and why does such marvels happen, who are the brains behind these amazing structures.???

I still marvel at the Roman arches and the building of many of today's bridge spans that accommodate millions of cars and trucks each year.   I have heard that some bridges will fail if people walk in lock step--march across them, how the heck does that work?????

The Grand Cannon sky walk gives me the Willey's, I have a fear of heights that I can work with after a time of getting use to. I need time to adjust my brain to heights, to adjust myself to abnormal circumstances and except the the experience as normal.

As kid I climbed every tree I could find to the top but I did not do this on just one day, it took weeks and months before I could except I was off the ground.

Fuller is a hero of mine, he designed the geodesic dome that I fell in love with years ago.  He took a hint from world wide designs of curclear homes from the Igloo to African and  Asian Mongel huts.

These cantilevered structures remind me of stair cases built in the 1800 by a carpenter whose name is lost in time to churches he wandered into. The stairs still exist but no engineer so far can figure out how this wandering carpenter built these stairs.

Uh huh, madam, but still, I'm queasy about this cantilevered stuff.

By the way, I need to publicly apologize to the Bozo of Baltimore, for my rather unkind comment about his knowledge and experience in a comment I made here earlier.  It was 92 degrees out here the time I said that, and so I was, uh, sort of cranky.

The Bozo of Baltimore actually knows a lot of stuff about a lot of things franksolich doesn't know.

Really, and franksolich sincerely respects the Bozo of Baltimore for that.

The Bozo of Baltimore is older, grown hoary with the wisdom of age; he once served in the U.S. Navy for which we're all grateful, especially myself; he's built a business (something franksolich has never done) and become a landlord dealing with all the problems that encompasses (again, something else franksolich has never done); and of course he was well-schooled in the politics of the street; he was probably stealing tricycles and holding them for ransom by the age of three years.

And his current prosperity wasn't gained by being stupid; nobody stupid could last five minutes in the sorts of businesses in which the Bozo of Baltimore is engaged.

If Stimpy is really a mafioso, he's like Joe Pesci's character in "Goodfellas".

The back-story of my apology to the Bozo of Baltimore is that the neighbor was here earlier this morning, picking up some hay (the town drunkard had mowed the meadow a couple of days ago, and yesterday baled it), and while we were joking around, he mentioned that two Italian-looking guys were spotted eating at the Village Inn in the big city the other day.

Just covering myself, that's all.

Here is a clearer picture of the same hippie.

Its just a cantilever - beneath the rug is a heavy steel plate - carefully disguised by the ring of flowers around the perimeter - through the bamboo 'cane' runs a steel bar, which then curves into the side of the hippie's pants, ending in a small seat which is over the large metal plate under the rug. As long as this street performer doesn't move around too much, the illusion will hold.
