Big brother from a little city.

City Government demands all keys to properties belonging to Cedar Falls residents.

I like the dude who says that a "higher authority" will decide if the plan is unconstitutional.  Well, yes.  A higher power will do so.

ON ELECTION DAY.  There is no higher authority in this country than the American voter.

So what happened there on June 13th?

As one YouTube viewer comment suggested, "Why not make it voluntary?" Problem solved.

This doesn't apply to private single family homes, only apartments with three or more units. Still it's messed up, and hopefully the city would be liable for any thefts that occur do to misuse of the lockbox keys.

Quote
The Cedar Falls City Council voted 6-1 on Monday to expand an existing 2004 ordinance that required lock boxes containing keys at buildings with six or more units and commercial buildings with sprinkler system or unsupervised alarms. The new ordinance, which can become law with a signature by Mayor Jon Crews, expands the requirement to apartment buildings with just three or more units.

Kinda reminds me of the idiots in my town........they require every home equipped with an alarm system to provide the town police with an "alarm certificate", which lists the contacts for the central monitoring facility.

Every year I get a letter telling me that the city ordinance requires me to provide them with a list of TWO neighbors who have both a key to the house, AND the arm/disarm code for the system.

Every year I write them back and advise them that the central monitoring facility (which they have the number) can remotely shut off the alarm, and advise them that if I have to pass out keys and codes, I might just as well leave the house unlocked........ :censored:
