Question for those who live in the south re; Love Bugs
« on: June 15, 2011, 11:59:31 AM »
I've been meaning to ask this for sometime now.  Over the last 3 or 4 years we've been really blessed in our area to either not have very many love bugs or none whatsoever.

Is anyone else experiencing this or are the love bugs as bad or worse in your area as usual?

Just a curiosity question.

Thanks,
KC

are they leaving residue from their loving?

Heh.  Nope.  None of that.  Love Bugs are NASTY, vile little bugs that fly around by the hundreds of thousands and are attracted to carbon monoxide so ... they fly around the highways.

I've actually seen them so bad around here that while making a 50 mile trip I had to stop twice to clean them off my windshield and out of my radiator so the truck wouldn't overheat.  They were actually over 2 inches thick on the front bumper when I got home and they STINK!

The worst experience I had was on a ride back from San Antonio.  I was on my Wide Glide which had forward footpegs on it.  I was hunkered down behind the windshield and would peek above the windshield ever couple of seconds to see if anything was coming.

This was between La Grange and Brenham.  When I got home the bottom of my boots were coated with the damn things and because I wear a (*dutch ... don't read this part) baseball cap turned around backwards instead of a helmet the hole in the cap let them FILL the inside of my hat!

NASTY.

You know what I learned on that ride though?  As bad as they smell ... they are actually kind of sweet.   :(

Beats me.  I just know one flew in my mouth and because they are so soft it kinda splattered.  At 70 mph it doesn't take much to make them mush.

What's a "love bug"?

I thought that was another name for VW beetles.

So that is where Lindsay Lohan's problems started?  She caught something from Herbie the Love Bug.

I can't post pics, since I don't have a photobucket, but here is a link Deb.

Make sure you look at the pic of them in Walt Disney World.  That really doesn't do justice.

As a teenager for a while before becoming shuttle driver and grease monkey, I washed trucks that had made trips to Florida. The front of the trucks were like velvet when they returned. It didn't matter what color they were when they left here, they came back black.

I think the best way to get them off your vechicle is to soak it in gas and thump a match from a safe distance. Then just buy a new car and don't drive it.

I haven't really noticed a decrease here in Georgia. I know they're worse in some places than others. I've also noticed that light colors, especially white, seems to attract them.

http://www.bugs.com/bugs_database/other_bugs/love-bugs.asp

Quote
The Love bug is a member of the family of march flies. It is also known as the honeymoon fly, telephonebug, kissybug or double-headedbug.

Its reputation as a public nuisance is due not to its bite or sting (as it is not capable of either), but to its slightly acidic body chemistry. Because airborne love bugs can exist in enormous numbers near highways, they often die on automobile windshields, hoods, and radiator grills when the vehicles travel at high speeds.

If left for more than an hour or two, the remains become dried and extremely difficult to remove. In the past, the acidity of the dead adult body, especially the female's egg masses, often resulted in pits and etches in automotive paint and chrome if not quickly removed. However, advances in automotive paints and protective coatings have reduced this threat significantly. Now the greatest concern is excessive clogging of vehicle radiator air passages with the bodies of the adults, with the reduction of the cooling effect on engines, and the obstruction of windshields when the remains of the adults and egg masses are smeared on the glass.

This site says they have an acidic taste, I beg to differ.  Heh.
