I dunno.

Anybody's okay with me.

I've been watching John McCain, and am wondering about something.

He's taking an awful long time to indicate a preference for running-mate.

Of course, there's no rush on it, but it sort of seems to defy conventional political wisdom.

I could be way off base here, but I wonder.

John McCain is of course fully and sorely aware he doesn't enjoy the affections of a great many Republicans (he has mine, but I am affectionate towards any Republican), and being a professional in politics, and wanting to win the election, John McCain is fully and sorely aware he has to do something to make those Republicans more affectionate towards him.

So I'm wondering if John McCain's waiting for those Republicans who don't like him, to state THEIR preferences (I like Duncan Hunter myself), after which things go from there.

John McCain is no primitive; he wants BadCat's vote, and if it means BadCat has a big say (notice the word "big") in his running-mate, well, John McCain's going to listen to BadCat.

I could be way off base, but it seems odd, and this seems at least a possible explanation.

condi is awesome, but the conventional wisdom says that the VP nominee either has to deliver a state,
or fulfill a weakness in the presidential nominee.

we are totally stocked up on foreign policy with mccain.  but condi would put a portion of the african american
vote in play.

I think he has a different candidate depending on who gets  the nod for the dims.

he got the nomination early, relatively speaking.  the first bush tapped his veep the day before the convention.  W waited
until not too long before his convention, as well.

But usually there's clues, even slight ones.

I don't buy this McCain-Romney lovefest; I don't think it's going to happen.

However, even if my own speculation is erroneous, it's still a good bargaining-chip for those who don't like McCain, to use.

McCain wants, and needs, BadCat's vote.  It's up to BadCat (and all others alienated about McCain) to start saying, "Well, if you do such-and-such [as in the name of a running mate], I'll vote for you."

Even though John McCain is inevitable, for those who don't like him, I suggest you have some clout, and so should use it.

But the goal is to be sure BadCat, and others alienated by McCain, is happy about McCain.

A happy BadCat is a McCain voter who pulls in other voters for McCain.

Sure, sure, BadCat would probably vote for McCain if that's the bottom line, McCain or either of the two utterly deplorable Democrat choices, but as a McCain supporter (he was not my first choice, but now he's my choice), I want BadCat to be an enthusiastic voter for McCain.

And I think the best way to make BadCat happy is by naming a running-mate who BadCat likes--probably any of those mentioned in this poll, BadCat likes, but I can't speak for BadCat, other than as an exemplar of those less than happy with McCain.

But again, you have clout.

More clout than a professional Republican such as I am, have.

I strongly suggest you, sir, and others like you, start talking up candidates for the vice-presidency that you like, suggesting that such a selection would make you more enthusiastic about McCain.

It's very possible, and good politics, that you get more than what you think you can get.

I have read (and I also hear from various sources;  my Dad is very active in the party) that graham is making a strong
comeback.  mccain was pissed off at him because he didn't endorse him before the primary.

if I had to guess, I would guess that it will be graham, and that will make the base happy.

Sanford isn't up there, so I'll refrain from voting.

I hate to say it, but I can't think of a single person that would accept the VP position that I like.  I have no idea who Mark Sanford is, but he can't be any worse than Charlie Crist.  I want to like Romney.  At least I can respect people who are successful in the business world, because it isn't easy.  My first answer is Grover Norquist, but outside of conservative circles and DC think-tanks, nobody knows who he is.  Maybe if John Linder were nominated he could finally get the Fair Tax pushed through.

He's a Representative from Georgia.  His only claim to fame is unsuccessfully pushing the Fair Tax every year.
