As one of Congresswoman Giffords' constituents, I probably have a more vested interest in her health and the issue of whether or not she is fit to return to duty than anyone else here. While I wholeheartedly wish her all the best for a complete recovery, it is obvious that she is not going to be in a condition anytime soon to resume her congressional duties. This leaves my district unrepresented in Congress. Congressmen already only get a short 2-year term, much of which they seem to spend campaigning for their next 2-year term. She's already been out of commission for 5 months.
As a fellow human being, I reiterate that I hope she recovers completely and I certainly wish NONE of this had happened. The fact that her attacker is currently getting away with murder, including that of the little girl, pisses me off no end. He may NEVER be charged, due to his mental condition, which I personally think is complete and utter bullshit.
As someone who lives in her District, I wish I had a voice in Congress. Maybe it's only a symbolic voice, but unfortunately it's the only voice I have, except for the AZ Senators, who are tasked with representing the entire state, not just my little part.

I can definitely sympathize, though I'm obviously unable to do much more than express that.
The so-called "timetable" of May 2012 is apparently the only yardstick that's being broached right now. I don't have time to research right now, but there surely are congressional rules about lengthy, protracted illnesses of representatives and how their constituents are being represented during those illnesses.
It's pretty clear based on the article that Giffords is not, and probably never will be, fully recovered. We can wish and hope and pray and all of that, but after the brain sustains that much damage it's a miracle she's alive much less a vegetable. And while she's not a vegetable or in a coma, she's not 100%.
The thing is, if Giffords were to run for office today, she'd probably be reelected out of sympathy. And that ain't right either.
