Death In Nutcase Nadin's Family Takes A Back Seat To Birds
« on: June 08, 2011, 10:32:25 PM »
So nutcase nadin's father passed away. She's inconsolable. Worried about her birds.
Hope it wasn't radiation poisoning.

Well got the news I somewhat expected
my dad passed. He's been very sick for a few years.

Now here is the problem, mostly solved... for all of you with furry friends count yourselves lucky. Boarding two parrots is a nightmare. So tomorrow off we go to the doctor to get them checked so they can be boarded at their vet's

Note to self, keep their annual checkups up to date for these emergencies.

45. Well found a place that will board them for seven bucks
a piece... in one cage, they'd kill each other, Once I find out if hubby can take leave, I might cancel the vet visit, take them there, and have them checked when we come home. THey will need their check up one way or the other.

50. Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that...
My husband's kennel would take them. Too bad you don't live in Oklahoma. We have watched a fish and a snapping turtle once (the parents didn't have the heart to tell the kids that they're "pet" is a meanie and will have to be let go).

I am sorry for the loss of your dad.

52. They will stay with their vet
after they get their annual check up... in the morning.

Taking apples and their cereal... no waffles for them for the week to ten days we will have to spend down there.

Didn't another DUmmie have a dad that died recently?  I mean the dad died like 5 months ago, but the DUmmie who claimed to be close with the dad just found out about it?

That was poor, stupid Beth. Her five siblings all chose to not let her know.

Many a times my birds make me wonder
if we humans have way too much hubris... and cannot see what is in front of us? I mean about real animal intelligence and yes feelings.

Last year our Tuky passed... yes it hurt, but we saw real grief in the conures, especially cooky.

Well today, while I was making reservations to go to my dad's funeral my husband explained this to the birds... so he told them my dad died... and then told them like when Tuky died. Both parrots lowered their heads... and were much quieter after that.

Nutcase is not going to abandon the field to Horse with no Name. She's putting up a hell of a fight.
Now it's grieving parrots!

I can believe that birds grieve for the loss of one of their own, but not that they understood about Nads dad dying.

Come on, they're birds. Lizards with feathers. They have brains the size of a soybean.

That doesn't mean they can't mourn the loss of their mate or one of their chicks.

Thundley, come on, listen to Gobucks. Put yourself in the bird's spot.

Mama bird comes back to the nest, sees that her one little hatchling has assumed ambient temperature. She nudges the little cold beast a couple of times to try and get it to take the bug she holds in her beak. No response.

Mama bird rolls the carcass out of the nest. Eats the bug and flies off. Mama Bird will remember where the nest is, but not what was in it 5 minutes ago.

I know of a story of a Canadian goose that was pretty attached to his caretaker (goose had been injured and was at a sanctuary) and died not too long after the old man did. His daughter said the goose would follow her father around all day like a dog. When her father passed it was pretty quick and they say he was dead before he hit the ground and the goose guarded him till he was found. After they took him away the goose stopped eating and died about two weeks later.

As strange as it seems, Thundley is correct.
It's not common, but, does happen.

Disney. I can't believe there's a debate over bird emotions.

Why wouldn't birds that mate for life grieve for the loss of that mate?

Because their brains are too small and primitive for anything but eating and reproduction.
If there's no food or no mate, they may look for the food or the mate, but that's hardly emotion.

If their nest and chicks are destroyed, they simply start building a new nest.
The other birds don't bring over a casserole.

No one is going to win this debate, because there's no way to know.  There are people in certain situations, like a war for example, where a human may dispose of a loved one's body and move on very quickly because they must for their own survival.

Who knows what goes on in a bird's or any animal's brain?  Who knows what goes on in a human's brain?  What exactly is the definition of grief or any emotion?  The only way we think we know a human is experiencing a particular emotion is their outward behavior, if an animal has similar outward behavior how does anyone know the cause?

I love animals but birds freak me out, I scream if 1 comes near me, and birds in the house freak me out because they poop everywhere, yuck, so I purposely left them out.

71. The vet is a good place
it is just that they require a check... their annual. We have had a relationship with him going oh 25 years now. Their business hours start at nine, they are seeing the kids at 8:40

I am taking two apples, their cereal and popcorn that of course can be shared with human and birds alike.

They like the kids, and we like their vet, When tuky passed he was like the best.

Bird brain to bird brain.
