Fashion Question for the ladies....
« on: April 18, 2008, 12:03:22 PM »
Keep in mind, I'm not a skinny minnie like BEG and Schadie, and I don't own high heels.

Not next week, but the week after I'll be in High Point, NC for a ballet convention thingy with my daughter.  On the Saturday night they are having what they call a "gala".  I have absolutely no clue what to wear.  The other moms aren't much help, they tell me what the girls have worn, but not the moms.  The girls wear anything from church dresses to promstyle dresses.  My daughter has a shiny silky shirt she's wearing with black dressy pants and black heels.

Me, I got nothin'.    I never do "fancy" so my stuff, even my church clothes, lean toward casual comfy, rather than dressy.   I don't want to look like a grandma, and I don't want to look like I'm trying to look 20, either.  So, suggestions, ideas??   Comfort is # 1 priority for me.

I ain't no lady, but I have an opinion anyway.  Use your daughter's wardrobe as a guide for how to dress.  Dress up to that level, in your own fashion of course.  And wear heels.

If you don't know how to walk in heels, practice.  Remember to aim to put each foot almost in front of the other during your walk.  You will learn "The Glide".

I can't wear heels on the best of days, and I'm in the midst of a medical procedure on my foot that makes it painful to walk at all some days, let alone in torture shoes!!   And I'll be having the next "installment" done the day before we leave.

But thanks for the advice...maybe I'll look for a nice pair of black pants and a fancy top to go with it.

Flame, this time of year you can probably get away with a dressier flat sandal. Why not look for something like that to wear with the pants and top? Or even something like ballet flats--they are very simple, but comfy and while they won't be the center of attention, they won't be noticable either as comfy. And maybe try, with all the longer pants, to get a pant that cuts low over the shoe too so they aren't as visible. Just a few thoughts.Enjoy

You can never go wrong with dressy black pants, simple black flats and nice dressy top. I would stick with either a black top that's kind of dressy (maybe the same material as the pants?) or something with a little flair like metallic or sequins? If you're going to be shopping, ask the ladies at the store what they think would look good on you.

To me, a "gala" means a dress but slacks would probably work too. Can you look up pictures of past years? I'm assuming this gala is held every year. Google the organization that's responsible and see if they posted pictures from years past. You can see how everyone dressed.

That's what I would do.  I'm no fashion expert, Lord knows, but a nice pair of black pants, a nice blouse accompanied with a pair of simple black flats should get you by.  Since your going to be a bit handicapped by your foot, your comfort should be your first concern.  Thom McCan (spelling?) are sold at Kmart and are what I usually by since they are a bit padded, are made of soft leather and are reasonably priced.

These days, me in heels reminds me of a pig on stilts.  I've got a closet full of 'em, still love 'em, I just can't wear 'em.  Bum knee.  To twist my knee would put me in the hospital.  I can't have that.

BTW:  Your going to be in my neck of the woods!

How about tweeds?

If one is comfortable with what one wears, one looks good in what it is one wears.

That's why I never wear jeans, but always corduroy.

You know, Brown-Eyed One, I looked at every single one of your choices.

Remember, Flame says she's pulchtritudinally different from you and lurkalot and ACC and schadenfreude and Miss Mia and Amity and &c., &c., &c.

Your selections would of course look good on you and all the other fine women here, but Flame needs something different.

I think women look best in clothes they feel comfortable in.

EVERY woman can wear a black dress.  She would look fabulous in a black dress, but I posted those pictures before I read about her foot problem.

Well, now, Flame is a woman--I assume, but given the recent revelations about Yosemite Sam, aka California Peggy, I'm not quite so comfortable thinking that any more--and Flame isn't trying to look good for other women.

Flame is trying to look good to we men.

I think Flame would be an eye-grabber for men, in tweed.

Not shiny stuff, Flame.

You want pastel.

You want to draw attraction to yourself, not your clothes.

Of course you don't want to be an attention whore, madam.

You're not a primitive, after all.

But seriously, in the past, what sorts of clothes were you wearing when you felt most comfortable in a FORMAL or semi-FORMAL situation?  That should be what you choose.

Probably what you wear to church would be excellent.
