I am sorely tempted to build an electric VW THING.  I am on a twelve step vehicle reduction program at this point but once that is accomplished it is a very real possibility.  I don't have to go very far so an electric for a second vehicle would be fine.

I voted 'probably no'.  Would I buy an electric car?  Hell no.  Would I love to take an interesting car like a Triumph Spitfire or an MG B and convert it to run on electricity?  Yes, but parts are expensive and I have nowhere to plug it in at home or a way to keep the batteries functional during the winter.  It just won't work for me.

VW kits are plentiful and not very expensive (about $2-3k).  'course, they only weight about 1200 pounds soaking wet, so there's not a lot that needs to be moved.

I could see it, if the technology improved about two orders of magnitude and the price was about half.  I may rebuild my old worn-out Ranger into one after I retire, with over a quarter-million miles on its bottom-of-the-line 4-banger, it's not like I'd be giving up anything on power.

NFW. Even assuming the exact same range, reliability, cargo capacity, price, vehicle mass and so on - the  first deep creek crossing or mile long boghole and that sucker would become an ornament.

Now if you had been with me at the market the other day and saw what I did, you might be singing another tune.

Never wear your helmet in the grocery store.  Person has a poka dot scooter with a bicycle style helmet. The rest of the clothing statement was a cross between Forrest Gump and Rob Petrie (vauge Dick Van Dyke show reference )  We are talking arm bags the whole nine yards.  Vesta you riding a scooter???

Oh yeah and a scooter is good about three months a year around here unless you like wearing a fur lined jock strap electric socks and full leathers.  Gets cold.

Slightly off topic.  I had one of the first Corvairs that came with a gas furnace.  It had a fold down back seat and the gas furnace would run with the motor off.  Great for parking.   :naughty:

Nope.  I like V8's way too much.  If I could afford a V12, there would be one sitting outside right now.

No ****in' way for me. I'd like to get more gas mileage, so I'm getting a motorcycle.

It would take a pretty big bribe to get me in an electric car. Like to the level of some countries GDPs big.

There aren't many places in Kansas where an electric car is even feasible.  Possibly for second cars in larger cities...unless you buy one with a wind turbine for recharging.   :mental:   Besides, Obama's plans to skyrocket the cost of electricity, and to tax us by miles driven, make electric cars as expensive to run as gas...if not more.  I'd like to get a CNG car; there are CNG filling stations in this area, the gas runs so clean that engines can run for 500,000 miles easily, home "filling stations" are not terribly expensive, and they retain a decent travel distance per fill-up.  There are finally CNG cars sold in Oklahoma, so it's even possible someday.

You can get conversion kits for common types of vehicle for both petrol or diesel to run them as a LPG/CNG fairly cheaply.

It used to be pretty common here in the light commercial fleets like taxis but the government ruined it by taxing the LPG more and the price difference has come back a lot closer to par so the procedure isn't quite so commonplace today.

Propane is horrendously expensive.  My brother has to heat his house with it, his bills are routinely x3 or x4 what I pay for natural gas heat.

I've thought about converting a car, but don't think I can find the time to add yet another project to my list.  I may change my mind as time goes on, however.  If we end up paying taxes by miles driven, I most certainly don't want to be paying taxes on the gasoline used for those miles, also.   :argh:
