Treasury to tap pensions to help fund government

Source: Washington Post

The Obama administration will begin to tap federal retiree programs to help fund operations after the government loses its ability Monday to borrow more money from the public, adding urgency to efforts in Washington to fashion a compromise over the debt.

Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner has warned for months that the government would soon hit the $14.3 trillion debt ceiling — a legal limit on how much it can borrow. With the government poised to reach that limit Monday, Geithner is undertaking special measures in an effort to postpone the day when he will no longer have enough funds to pay all of the government’s bills.

The U.S reaches the debt limit. They're using your pension to keep the U.S. afloat now. Yet another of many ways I'm glad I'm Canadian.

1. First they came for Social Security and I said nothing because I was under 65 and still working.

Then they came for the federal pensions and I said nothing because I wasn't a federal employee. Then they came for Medicare and I said nothing because I had health insurance. Then I turned 65 and I was insolvent and without health insurance and nobody spoke up for me.

30. No mention of the GOP action to refuse to increase the ceiling. Routine with their man in office.    Updated at 12:39 PM

No, it's all Obama's fault for trying to keep the dollar from collapsing just the fat cats have been engineering. Remember, they took their money and our jobs offshore. Y

up, blame Obama for that. It's amazing how one man can destroy the whole system the GOP fought like cats and dogs to eliminate every protection to keep this from happening since the days the FDR administration and blamed him for everything in the world.

There is no history of any of that. Nothing to see here, move along.

Hey retard, how does a skyrocketing debt-to-GDP ratio keep the dollar from collapsing?

Let the dollar collapse. The GOP is going to have a hell of a time justifying their "fiscal responsibility" come election time when Americans are paying $15 a gallon for gas.

He just gave them more time to play the game.

You claim you want a collapse then say you want to blame the GOP for the collapse.

Got it.

78. You're just playing their game.

We're screwed anyway. The Democrats will eventually cave to Republican demands for massive cuts, in which case WE LOSE ANYWAY. The poor go hungry, the elderly lose their healthcare, and children lose their educations. Oh, and the Republicans score a win, shoring up support from their teabagger base and guaranteeing that they get to stick around for another election cycle.

Let the dollar fall, and the corporations will scream bloody murder. The Republicans will backpedal so fast you'll think they're running in the Amgen. The American people, when gas prices double overnight, will all but stage a rebellion. People will get pretty pissed off when they can't afford to drive to work anymore. The Republicans will end up looking like idiots who put political grandstanding above the well being of the American people. The teabagger political philosophy will be blasted in all political circles.

And you're worried about savings accounts?

Another: let's-make-it-happen-then-blame-them-for-grandstanding post.

89. Yea, let the dollar colapse!

Just what every American does when they get into debt up to their eyebrows! Raise their debt ceiling? Yea, right! They dont go borrow more money?? They rain in spending and look at what they can do w/o to bring their budget back in line with their income! What a concept huhh?? Americans paying the price now for not electing a president who will get us off the middle east teet and become energy independant by drilling in Alaska and staking a claim in the arctic like Russia and China have already done. If your reading this then check this vid out and you can clearly hear WHY we are not going to get cheaper gas!

4. "to borrow more money from the public"

I think that the 'public', that is, We, the People, should form a bank to monitor this borrowing. Because, in essence, the borrower is writing their own loan note, which sucks for We, the People.

Don't bank on me!

6. This could easily be solved of they SLASHED THE "DEFENSE" BUDGET.

1/4 of the budget that borrows 45% of its spending...and is one of the few constitutionally mandated functions of the feds unlike SS, welfare, education etc

24. And end the ****ing wars!

...based on lies to benefit the "oil"igarchy.

And tax the ****ing rich!

How difficult is it to figure this out?

Bush was spending an additional $1 trillion every 10 years. Obama is spending an additional $1.7 trillion (non-defense) every 12 months.

And on it goes.

Debt is good.

Government is good.

The only bad spending is defense spending.

Feeding people who won't defend themselves...i.e. slaves.

If it were Bush and the 110th congress guess who would be at fault to the media and the DUches?
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

Blame is always going to be put at the top. obama will shoulder this one regardless of fault.
Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.

I took the time to read the whole thread, and at times it made me feel that all of DU is composed of moles, and idiots that believe what moles say to them.

Raising taxes in a recession never ends well - yet they all are convinced that is the solution to the economic downturn.

What he's doing can't even be considered Keynesian. Keynes was never about f'ing with the supply side. He knew full well the supply side was needed. Especially in times when demand just wasn't cutting it.

I think he only sort of follows Keynesian economics, but has corrupted it to fit his own agenda.  Obamanomics is based more on Cloward-Piven theories.

Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT a Keynes supporter and think his policies are f'ed up 3 ways to Sunday, but even they weren't as batshit insane as what Obama is doing. ...and that's bad.

It's no longer about competing economic theories.

They had to sell Keynes using the idea of "fairness" for the working guy. Promises of future fairness implies current states of unfairness. Promises of future remedy implies no current chance of self-remediation.

That, in turn, evolves into tales of a system too morally bankrupt to allow The Little GuyTM a place at the table of opportunity.

Moral bankruptcy demands a villain.

Villains must be denied power if justice is to prevail.

But the power never disappears, as of it were a force subject to the thermodynamic law of conservation.

So the liberals must seize the power for themselves.

They must because they are the victims/heroes of the morality play.

Just look at the flip side: How many DUmbasses wail that life has been cruel and unfair and it is the fault of The Others. How many of them imagine themselves the noble champion of the downtrodden. They'll be happy to prove how much smarter they are, all you have to do is relinquish all power to them and they will show you.

It's all very Shakesperean in its pathos and tediously predictable in its trajectory.
