California officials announce closure of 70 state parks

State parks officials today announced the closure of 70 parks because of the state budget deficit, including the governor's mansion and the Stanford mansion in Sacramento.

Gov. Jerry Brown's January budget plan proposed reducing the state parks budget by $22 million. The Legislature in March approved $11 million in cuts to state parks and $10 million in cuts to off highway vehicle parks in the next fiscal year, with $22 million in cuts to state parks in future years.

The California State Parks System was directed to identify which parks would close based on attendance rates and historical significance. The department operates more than 270 state park units covering more than 1.4 million acres.

"We regret closing any park," Ruth Coleman, director of California State Parks, said in a statement. "But with the proposed budget reductions over the next two years, we can no longer afford to operate all parks within the system."

Here's a full list of the closures from the parks department:

4. *that's* what we really have to watch out for...
"getting rid" of those "unused assets" because we "happen" to be in a "budget crisis..."

Yes. All we need to do is raise the marginal tax rate to 110% and everything will be OK.

6. Standard scare tactic they've been using for decades when they can't agree on a budget
School kids will go hungry. Old people will die alone. Your community will burn to the ground. All the parks will be closed.

I'll pass this along to Paul Ryan.

14. Unfortunately, our state requires 2/3rds vote to raise taxes. The Republicans have blocked
 tax increases for decades.

There are many parks on that list that I have visited regularly. There are many parks on that list that families visit regularly for low cost vacations. It is really sad on so many levels that they are going to be closed.

Okay, lemme get this straight--DUmmies get up in arms because of development and "exploitation" of land due to human expansion; i.e., conservationist NIMBY/BANANA assholes.

Then they get their granny panties in a bunch because we leave shit alone?

I'm confused.

Liberals are creatures of ego. They fail because they are oppressed. They are necessary because they are the saviors of the world.

Without crisis they have no explanation for their failures and not unction for their saving graces.

Everything must be a crisis.

Crisis demands emotional unction.

Charge a higher fee to enter the park...OH NO...that would keep the hippies ppor and other riff-raff out. Can't have that happen.

Why don't you California primitives get together, and volunteer to keep the closed parks clean and maintained ? It would keep them available for the community, and get you some exercise to boot... Oh wait... The unionized Park Dept labor won't allow that sort of scab riff-raff activity, will they ?

Too bad, primitives.

Maybe Kalifornia off-roaders will get back some of the "wilderness" land confiscated in the 70's and 80's by the enviroweenies.

What can you expect from the same morons that oppose hazard reduction controlled burning of land, then cry because their hilltop mansions (and outdoor dope crops)  go up in smoke when a big mean ass wildfire roars through there.

Nope.  They can't afford to keep the places open, but they will keep enforcers there to keep people out.

Not a peep from any of them about the DoD wanting to take over the OHV areas in Johnson Vally either. The King of the Hammers race is getting really established and I was looking forward to making it out there for that one of these days.
I guess if it is not what they want it for then it is OK to shut it down.

A couple of nice hiking places that I enjoy are on the list, but, honestly they are mostly wilderness, so if I wanted to go hiking there I could find a way  :naughty:

Most California state parks, at least the ones I go to (the hiking/wilderness areas) only have charges for parking or camping.  They could have tried a nominal $1 or $2 admittance fee, but apparently they would rather make it all about taxes  :whatever:

There is a tour bus company that I see all the time at one area, because I am sure they are making money hand and fist off of the primitive-types, since their total trip time stop has yet to be over 15 minutes:

Get off of said tour bus, fanny pack brimming with who knows what, sporting a golf hat, wearing low-tread tennis shoes/birkenstocks, and proudly carrying around a locally-sourced Ozarka spring water (that the tour bus company picked up in bulk at Sam's Club).

One big snake, tick, and mosquito-infested rock encrusted hill later, and they are all back on the bus.

So much for your rustic hike through the Ozarks.  Next time, try Sequiota Park, inside the city.  ::)
