Can a Hybrid Car Save You Money?

Published : Tuesday, 03 May 2011, 9:35 PM CDT

DALLAS - With the cost of gas spiking across the country, many consumers are once again considering alternative fuel sources. We all know that buying a hybrid is usually a green choice, but will it save you any green?

In 5 or 6 years when these folks driving todays hybrids start to bitch about problems and batteries that should put the last nail in the coffin of hybrids, unless the government forces you to buy one.

After the Volt will come the Ampere and then the last of the electric line, the What.

As they have conveniently "forgotten" the cost of the electricity to charge the car while it's parked, even that figure is wrong.  Not only will you save no money on energy, you will also lose the upfront money on the cost of the car and the money to replace the batteries in a few years.  Oh, and I wonder how much wear and tear the weight of the batteries will cause on tires and suspension...

Ah, but the important thing is that it makes the greenies feel good, not that it actually saves anything.   ::)

It only takes 19 years if gas is $10/gallon.

I'm still firm in the belief that diesel is the fuel for the future. Leaps and bounds have been made with it yet people continue to ignore it.

You get on average as good or better MPG then a gas hybrid, more power and at 300,000Km do you think that hybrid will still be running well?

As it is now hybrids will make little to no difference and could in fact turn out to be worse in the long run.

I guess the only thing that matters is it makes people feel like they're making a difference however, that's true of most things.

Out of my circle of friends - everyone drives some form of diesel 4x4. That said - there are few diesel powered family cars that aren't some overpriced euro thing. There is slowly a better selection emerging from the Asian marketplace but it's still a market dominated by the gasoline models.

Let's not forget the hazardous waste created by the manufacture of new batteries and regenerated by the disposal of the used up batteries.

I figured it with the car we have that gets @22mpg at $4/gal and it would take over 100 years.

I broke the calculator. It told me it would take -157.5 years. I think I'll try again....

Nope whenever I put in a MPG figure better then the hybrid it gives me some ridiculous amount of negative years.
