Actually, I suspect this might explain the current popularity of Donald Trump and Ron Paul; as no conservative Republican with sterling credentials has yet emerged from the current pack of possibilities (disclosure: franksolich is supporting John Boehner, but as usual franksolich's first choice probably won't get it).
People want a conservative Republican candidate, but there's not one around right now.
(Please notice the all-important phrase, "right now.")
And since there's not one around right now, people are desperately flailing around for someone totally unlike the current president, in this case unconventionals such as Trump or Paul.
Despite his sordid tawdry personal life and character, if Donald Trump were the only viable alternative to the Big Zero, I'd vote for Trump in half a second. Anybody's better than what we have now.
(Note to Rebel: I know Herman Cain is your candidate, and of course his qualifications and character are sterling, his record impeccable, but he has yet to come on strongly. If Cain can pull out ahead of all of these Wendell Willkies, I'm on the bandwagon, beating the drum and blowing the horn for him. But it hasn't happened yet.....but of course there's still plenty of time.)
