Sounds like all the space of a small efficiency, aka 'Studio,' apartment with all the problems of home ownership added in.  Still, I suppose there is some small market for it.

A fool and his money...

$100k for something the size of my apartment.  No thanks.  You can blame Portland's land-use regulations for the high prices and lack of real estate.

$100K?  This will be a failed business venture.  Won't be investing.

There are companies that build and sell those little homes and the price is usually $20-50k depending on the size.

Karin--watch the video--the SMALL houses are going for $120K to $180K for the 680 ft2 "2 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath" model.

After a quick search of Portland real estate, I'm willing to bet these places sell.  I found 3 properties in this price range, one specified contractors, so was a dump.  The other 2 were 1 bedroom "units" that advertised "walk to everything" and home owner's association dues...so probably the size of these houses.  This helps me remember what's NOT wrong with Kansas!!

Portland and the rest of the Northwest has gone much the same way as the worst elements of Kalifunny in the last 15-20 years.  Hell, Portland is where Kalifunnians go when they're too kwazy for SanFranSicko.

Good luck with those sales.

We will enjoy an average sized home for $80K.  Can you even fit a couch in a 360 sqft home?

This is the one I came across.

http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/

The only way you could get me to live in one of those is if it was so far out in the country that nobody could steal it or knock it over.  And it better be cheap, too.  Just think of all the outbuildings you would need to store your crap in to make it livable.

These remind me of the apartment/condos that are in Japan.

If anyone here ever watches "House Hunters International" on HGTV, this is about the size of a lot of the places people are looking at in Japan, Thailand, and a few other places in SE Asia. Very expensive!!!

Maybe the developers are trying to appeal to those from over there who are working in the NW. It's what they are used to at home, that are less expensive than at home.

I could rent one, maybe....they are about the size of my efficiency apartment I had in college...but I sure wouldn't buy one.

I agree, they could make decent temporary housing for single people.  I could see living in one short term, could be better than renting a room and they seem pretty comparable to a small studio apartment.

I think that's about the size of some cow camps I've summered in.  Even with three kids.  But we didn't stay inside much and the scenery around us was beyond beautiful.

I'm running into people, retired and most often single, who are living full-time in fifth-wheel campers.  Some have been doing it for several years and really like it.  Staying in one place at RV parks.  My house, at 912 sq. ft., is about small enough and it's basically for sleeping and cooking.

You know, it's interesting.  We have laws that state that farm animals are required to have a certain amount of space to live in, yet if you want to build homes like this, no one thinks twice.  We treat animals better than people.

My workshop is circa 650 sq feet. It cost about $35K to construct and is pretty much bombproof.

The hell would I pay triple that for half the space for ?

It is not about the space but the amazing things one with vision can do with it.

.Murphy beds have been around for 100 years, Mirrors in strategic places fool the eye as to space , then there is the wallpaper like door covering that fool the eye to believe that the door is half open and another big room on the other side.   One big blank wall, build a shadow box with floor to ceiling prints of landscape with light behind it, one can be living in down town Detroit and give the illusion you are living on the sea coast or the middle of the forest.

Paint color can make a room look much bigger or even smaller and more cosy.

We bought a used travel travel trailer with a horrid design, 6' by 28' The bathroom had a 4' bath tub and had we replaced it with a small shower we could have gained big space in the bathroom. Th kitchen set up was compact good size electric referagerator--also ran of propane, plenty of space ---BUT--- across from it they had installed another bench and table that was used as sleeping space for 2 small people.    The main area at the front was a U shaped affair with a seating arrangement around a fold down table to expand the whole deal to a king size bed.

Tandem wheels 8 total windows, 2 sky lights.    Very nice for a weekend but we should have gutted the whole thing and placed the inside back to front.----

Today I really enjoy checking out the for sale motor homes, boats and 5 wheel rigs for ideas for my home.
I think some of the designers have lived on Submarines as some of the space saving ideas are pure genius.
