what are you actually going to do to get us out of iraq?

hillary : I am going to talk a lot.

obama : I am going to talk a lot, but in a stern tone of voice.

on edit :

obama : I am going to talk a lot, but I will do it clearly, and in a stern tone of voice.

I just saw obama refer to himself as the "commander in chief" for the first time.  it instantly occurred to
me that when he does that on the same stage as john mccain, the audience will burst into laughter.

hillary just gave a cogent, intelligent answer on iran and nukes.  well, right up until she claimed that somehow
the world wasn't on"our side" on the issue . . . which rational country wants iran to have nukes?

it was an extended, informed answer, other than that.

on the bush tax cuts:

hillary : I will screw each and every one of you that actually have jobs

obama : I will, too.

hillary : yeah, but my schlong is bigger than his.

obama : yeah, but I am cuter

gibson points out that gov't revenues go UP when taxes are cut.

obama : it doesn't matter because it isn't fair because hedge fund managers make millions.

(huh? :???:)

then he basically acts as though he totally didn't hear the premise of the question.

gibson reiterates his question

obama's answer was utterly unintelligible.  something about houses and wall street.

hillary : taxes?  remember the good old 90's?  remember me?  I was there.  I was the one my husband WASN'T banging.

okay, hillary's answers (relatively speaking) are clear and informed.  she is on point, and knows her issues.
obama is struggling with the notion of a tax cap.  honestly.  he just screwed it up.

I can't believe she is losing to this guy.

obama drug social security into a tax discussion, which is a little alarming.

she picked up the SS issue, and rammed it home.

he stammered something about her having it both ways, and she interrupted him.  and he
made a frustrated gesture with his arms.  he just got verbally bullied by a chick on national
television.

debates are not his strong suit.

How is this...

2nd Ammendment :

Hillary: Gangmembers are mentally challenged and most gun owners I spoke with want them dead. We need a balance.

Obama: Just because you have an individual right to bear arms doesn't mean the gov't can't restrain you.  Just because you have private property doesn't mean the gov't can't take it.

Gibson: Didn't you favor a ban on handguns?

Obama: No, I didn't say that...We just want to make sure individuals don't have access to handguns

Gibson to Hillary : You support ban in DC?
Hillary: The Bush adminstration said they don't have enough facts.:  I don't know the facts either
Gibson pressed on...
Hillary: blah blah blah

Affirmative Action:
Stephanopolus: Would you change it so affluent African Americans not get it, and poor whites do?

Obama:  :rotf:
Clinton:  "no child left behind is working now"   "but I would end it"  and something about healthcare reform

Oil:
Clinton:  McCain's tax reform: Nope, wouldn't work, we need a windfall profit tax on big oil companies.
Obama:  we need to have an investigation...a 150 billion dollar investigation to see how we can make it cheaper...:eek

that was enough to make anyone ill.

I expected hillary to hack him to pieces with a machete, and burn the pieces that she didn't eat.

They had it on TV in the shop next to us.  Everytime I went down there, Obama was the only person on the TV.  Either he got a lot of air time, or I just happened to walk down there at the right moments.

when I bailed with 30 minutes left, gibson had mentioned several times that hillary was behind in time allotted.

I have read some early reviews/blogs, and most of them are of the opinion that he got his lungs handed to him.

I really think the dems are walking off a cliff with this obama guy.  a lot of what he says is wrong, and
most of the rest of it just doesn't make sense.  and what's left is always "part of the old way of doing
things in washington" that he is here to change.

ah, but he is inspiring. :whatever:

from the obama campaign on tonight's debate:

Quote
A statement from Obama campaign manager David Plouffe: “Tonight we saw a real choice between the old politics of point-scoring and distraction and a politics that focuses on bringing us together to actually solve the challenges we talk about every single election.  Continuing the theme of her campaign, Senator Clinton used every single opportunity she had to launch misleading attack after misleading attack against Barack Obama, which is why polls show that most Americans think she’s running the most negative campaign and don’t believe she’s trustworthy.  Barack Obama spoke about the issues that actually matter in people’s lives, like how he plans to end the war in Iraq, cut middle-class taxes, help people stay in their homes, and provide a secure retirement for our seniors.  That’s why more Americans are putting their trust in Barack Obama to bring about the change we need in Washington."

oh, for cryin' out loud . . .

Quote
For Obama, the harsh questioning from Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos of ABC News probably felt as though the media was trying to make up for a year's worth of allegedly ginger treatment all in one night. But it clarified the sharply different postures of the two campaigns.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

it's amazing.  the entire liberal universe thinks that The BarackStar! won last night.  PMSNBC's poll earlier this morning was 70-odd to 20-odd.  conservative bloggers and analysts think (as I did last night) that obama got gutted like a fish.

I ran across a "minority publication" last night that actually attacked hillary for attacking obama, and called obama's demeanor "presidential".

analyst on PMSNBC : "it was 40 minutes before they asked a question about the issues", the implication, of course, being that the debate was about gossip and innuendo before that.  first of all, since he is making his "judgment" his only qualification for the job, and since we know nothing about the man, people are understandably trying to get any insight that they can into his "judgment".   having a pastor for 20 years that is a semi-raving lunatic, thinking that babies are "punishment", thinking that wearing a simple flag pin is "false patriotism", and belittling poor country bumpkins that are less cosmopolitan that he and The MichelleStar!, are all perfectly valid opportunities to attempt to gain that insight.

and besides, there isn't 10 cents worth of difference in their stand on all of the issues put together.

I think McCain would shred him. Actually I think he could shred Hillary too. I'm not as confident about that one though. He's too cozy with her in general. If Barackstar! is the one, then McCain will have to shred him in such a way that doesn't come across at "mean ole whitey" picking on the "up and coming hope and change mixed race embracer of minorities." Oy.
