Local politics and the shit that comes out of it.
« on: April 30, 2011, 05:58:20 PM »
Those of us in my area know about the very odd things going on in a comunity in Maine, small town, very small town and for 25 years a Male health Spa operated. Every one in towns in both States Maine and New Hampshire  and half the country knew but for all those years no one on the police force or town council knew about the business.

Everyone knew this was a hooker joint, truck drivers from California asked directions to the Spa.  This was closed down only when the FBI did not inform the local police they were set up for a raid.  One girl was only 14 when the Feds went in.

Today the next town over from them have a problem. A day care center closed down and now some big time operaters and lawyers have invaded the town and want to set up a Gentlemans club in the vacant building.

According to the plans the Company wants a 2 part building the first is for a bar, dance floor and half clothed pole dancers.    Second part is also a bar, with totally naked dancers.

The town has gone nuts, the town planners are now in a position to turn down thousands of bucks from the corporation to approve the Club. ---:sarcasm:  For the guys that take everything I say seriously.

Half the town are ready to pony up big bucks to keep the club out of town, unfortunately I believe that not much can be done to keep this out of town.  These people are not on the town planning committee and can not be bribed.

This will all come down to court cases and the club will continue to build its business.  Get it in full business and the cops nor the town government will have any idea what is going on there.--So they swear as they drive about in brand new cars that were anonymous gifts.

BTW this little town turned down a request to build a very big facility to grow medical pot.  So now I will be interested in seeing if this Facility for Naked women's gets through the town council.

Something to do with the local politics of getting approval for a strip club.  I'm not positive which side she's on, except that being past the age of working there part-time, she's probably anti.

Oh wait--I see what she's bitching about now...

Uproar against plan for Eliot strip club: Residents say they 'don't care how much it costs' to stop proposal

By Kyle Stucker
Friday, April 29, 2011
Fosters.com -- Foster's Daily Democrat

(excerpt)

ELIOT, Maine — An overcapacity crowd of residents packed Town Hall Thursday night, most to speak in favor of two ordinances designed to block a proposed strip club at 403 Route 236.

Many members of the crowd, which well exceeded the room's 100-person maximum, voiced strong opposition to the proposed 403 Gentleman's Club while urging selectmen to overhaul the ordinances so they can withstand the legal battle certain to come from the club's lawyer.

"No matter how good the ordinance is — it could be perfect, unbeatable — it still will be in court for years," said Ed Cieleszko, the Board of Appeals chairman.

================================

But this is the part where I'm laughing my ass off:

Quote
The proposal for 403 Gentleman's Club was filed with the town on March 2 by Donald DeNunzio of DeNunzio Realty LLC, the owners of the building, which used to be a day care and is located near two churches and within a mile of Marshwood Middle School.

I still don't see how a strip club in Maine is gonna work--I mean, Maine women are like volcanoes--you only find a hot one every 100 years or so.

Well, I'll take your word on that, having never been there except in an airport in a military movement.  I would observe that the men there make their living lobstering, ripping off gullible tourists, and smuggling, rather than sheep farming, and moose aren't stump-broke, so it's not like they have a whole lot of competition.

Yeah, we don't have strip clubs around here, either.  It's not just the zoning.  I was just remarking to myself while shopping last weekend, "I've never seen a bigger collection of fatter asses than here."

I thougt this was an austerity move to save 'em from driving south to Ten's.   Geeze try to save a little petrol and they get all upset.   :hammer:

This is going to be a boon to the legal profession and that is about it.  Ex Post Facto legislation usually ends up in court.  The planning board really can't deny the permit since there is nothing against what they are proposing currently on the books. My guess is that it will be grandfathered like the "adult book store" down the street.  They (book store)  have been shot down numreous times for live sex shows because it was not the original use but they cannot shut the whole operation down it is grandfathered.

(Vesta do you remember the owner who dissapeared under 'suspicious' circumstances, some say related to the RI mob?)

Are we speaking of the old Moonlight Reader place on 236 ????

I only have one memory of that place that is personal.

Back in 1980 I living in Norfork Va. working in a hospital at that time decided to bring 3 kids home for a two week vacation with their gradparents.

One of my friends and coworker told me she had never been north of Richmond Va. so we planned to take a trip up the coast, drop off the kids and go into Canada.

We did so saw all the sights and on the way back SHE noticed the book store in my home town.  WTF  was very surprised to see this in such a little one stop light Burg so we as a lark stopped in to get gag gifts for our coworkers in VA.

Entering  the store that had perhaps 4 customers milling about the owner or  clerk came out from behind the desk and Holy Cow, he was a midget not 5 feet tall.  We were the only females, real ones at best and were looking for outrageous greeting cards with a Yankee slant that were very different from ones we could have bought in the south.

I noticed a bulletin board in the back with those 5x3 cards advertising for swingers welcome and the actual names and phone numbers and addresses of the people advertising.

Now I had left town to travel at that time in 1967, so it had been only 13-14 years since I had been gone except for off and on a week or so vacation.  I was totally amused, at the changes in MY small town, what a hoot.

I, when I picked up the kids got Dad aside and asked him what the hell was going on.  Dad came ungluded when I told him I had shopped there and refused to talk about it.  Mom on the other hand was more ---times change--.

So of again I went traveling and each time I came home in the last years the book store was still there.

OK I have now been home 23 years and in all that time have avoided 236 like the plague, in the time since most of the news about the book stores has been from the New Hampshire side with the stores along side truck alley headed into Maine.

Did have just one hysterical story about the Maine book store when parents complained that the children from the housing behind it were having sword fights with cast off dildos found behind the store at the bus stop.

I never heard of the owner whoever that was being found dead---You will have to fill me in here and then I will fill you in on the mob that came to Portsmouth and actually got on the shipyard to get to a sailor on a sub, was it the Sea Wolf or the Jack, that had inpregnanted the owner of a local restaurant and dance club.  Were you around when Karen's was the hot spot in town ????

What fun to live on any sea coast.

Which reminds me, I'm gonna have to plead with BEG to go to Spanky's before she leaves and send me a t-shirt:

I just don't know what to say here Sparky?

Vesta, I have been on the seacoast for most of sixty plus years minus a brief tour with my Uncle, Sam, down in PR and a couple winters in Miami.  Karen's, the bar outside the main gate?  Drain Bamage from years of use and abuse is my main claim to fame anymore. But what little is left seems to think the former owner of the Reader turned up missing and a 'silent' partner took over the operation.  I am guessing this recovered memory is from greater than five but less than fifteen years back.  Don't know if they ever found the guy or not.

There's about 5-6 styles of t-shirt from the place.  Funny as hell.  One has just the guy with a regular left arm and a HUGE right arm, one with him polishing a rocket, etc....you get the idea.  I drove by it every day heading to/from work...on Harbor Blvd around 1st Street in Santa Ana.  If you know anything about MMA, Tito Ortiz used to work there and they ended up sponsoring him for a while.

Karen's was down town Portsmouth, there is a Chinese restaurant there now across the street from the Federal building. Nam was going strong and the Prison was open so the town was full of Sailors and Marines, it was quite wild for a small town. The gate of the ship yard was just a short walk to the bridge and a block from the start of town in New Hampshire so the kids, most servicemen were in the 19-24 year bracket could get drunk and stagger back to base. ------After getting in big fights between the Candy Ass's and the Squids.

As a Navy town the Marines were taken to the lockup down town and the Sailors driven back to the base.

The bar I believe you are thinking of outside the shipyard gate was more of a yard birds hang out for lunch and dinner. I NEVER went in it, too afraid of running into family that worked on the boats.

It wasn't but a few years later that I heard they had opened a topless bar down town.   Dad wrote to me that the bar was a joke, the woman wore see through net blouse.   He said he did not know this for a fact but had been told about it.-----YAH, right !!!!

Some time in the wild times there was one gay bar, someone told my half Wit cousin to check out the wild woman there and he darn near got killed hitting on the ugliest drag queen in town, he never got over finding a dick under that dress and is still Homophobic at 70 years old.

What a shame, when they closed the prison and the Marines went to Nam the town was never the same.
The Yuppies began moving in, the gay comunity found us and the Sailors had no one to duke it out with.

Most of the dives have become art gallery's or consignment shops, the watering holes are now for the people that have to pay a cover charge, no more cheap eats, even the pizza places now have cloth table cloths.

I will bet you dollars for donuts this proposed strip club in Eliot has backing of the Lawyer that went to jail for a few years in the health club scandal. The day he was released he had a welcome  home party that lined both sides of the road for 1/4 mile.  I wonder if he was involved with the Reader and a silent partner also.

I believe Peters Palice is still operating behind the truck stops but cannot be sure.

Peter's Palace and the Fifth Wheel were both operating last time I went that way.  I can't imagine going into a booth to watch porn.  The VIP Cinema in Kittery was a much better alternative, nothing like watching Deep Throat or Behind the Green Door with a bunch of perverts.  Then too a sticky cinema floor is a sticky cinema floor, right??

I still can't place Karen's but macht nichts.  My memory is the prison closed around '72 more like the end of Nam.  Right about the time Nixon lifted Johnson's closure order at the SY.

Sounds like you might be talking about The Cave on Bow Street for the topless joint.  I remember a gay bar, was it something like The Sagamore Club or Starlite Club on State across from Wally's biker bar?  P_town has always had lots of watering holes.

How about the Back Aft in Kittery?  Ever hoist a pint in there?

And about the contract laggers from NN VA.  They were up many times doing work here.  Mostly they stayed at the traffic circle.  Always wanted directions to: The Strip bar in Kittery, (across from Vallie's now closed) Danish Health Club (now closed) and the Casino, which they really all thought you could gamble at, in Hampton. They were all depressed to find it a three hour bus ride south to CT. :cheersmate:

I never heard of the Back Aft, However the Starlight took over from the Italian American Club, a most interesting place, one had to sign in then go down stairs to the bar and dance club in the cellar. I think it was across the street from the Frosted Glass.

I do remember Lads that was out of town was that the club near the Sagamore bridge you are thinking of--  renamed after I left the area??--- and the Clover Club across the line in Mass.

AH good old Wally's, this was a new one to me when I finally came home for good. Those stairs to the bar and dance floor darn near killed me, at the good old age of 36 I was known to roll down those stairs a time or two. Very sharp pitch and high heels after a couple of drinks are a dangerous combernation.

Last time I was in there It was 7 a.m., the bartender worked with me and I was asked to deliver him him some papers from work as he was on a 2 week vacation.   Holy Mollee 7 am and the place was a jumping, drunks every where, some of the woman looked to be almost my mothers age. I was freaking amazed, especially when the bartender brough me a tap beer I had not ordered and placed 3 -4 plastic cups upside down in front of me.

One would think from all the dives I had somehow  found myself in  from Honolulu to San Fransisco and up the east coast I would have known and understood the difference in the bar world. Nope, never been in a bar unescorted at any time before ,and not before 8PM----Here was another world I did not know existed--7 AM party in a small town--strange.

The lagers are a hoot, there were not that many females in the trade back in the 1980's because on one job two of us females had to share a hotel room with 6 males, we go the bed they slept on the floor but had we been sent further from VA we would have insisted on separate rooms, especially if it was a rip off and AB removal job of 2-3 weeks.

Darn it is fun to be young, as age comes about we have to ask ourselves if we would if given the chance to do it all again--would we?????

I can honestly say that in my youth I never, ever, drank in P_town (mom worked in town and I would never heard the end of it).  And, since I no longer drink, I won't be drinking there now.  That said there are still a lot of watering holes but few can probably hold a candle to some of the bucket of blood places of a mere twenty years ago.  P_town has perfumed over that stink.  Yuppies just don't like stepping in warm vomit on their nice brick sidewalks.
