Arizona Gov. caves
« on: April 19, 2011, 11:09:42 AM »
PHOENIX (Reuters) – Arizona's Republican Governor Jan Brewer on Monday vetoed two controversial bills, one mandating proof of U.S. citizenship to run for president, the other allowing guns on college campuses, in a clear setback for conservatives who control the state legislature.

Brewer, who grabbed headlines a year ago when she signed a get-tough state law cracking down on illegal immigrants, vetoed the bills in an announcement late on Monday.

The so-called "birther bill," would have made Arizona the first state in the nation to require presidential candidates prove U.S. citizenship by providing a long form birth certificate, and other forms of proof including baptismal or circumcision certificates, to be placed on the state ballot.

"I never imagined being presented with a bill that could require candidates for president of the greatest and most powerful nation on earth to submit their 'early baptism or circumcision certificates' ... This is a bridge too far," she said..

I wonder who got to her? Was she visited by someone with the Obama Gestapo? This is Bull-Pelosi. She should be impeached and replaced with someone who has some gonads.

Baptismal and circumcision records?

Are you kidding me?

I agree with Brewer. That is a bridge too far.

What happens if the candy-date isn't circumcised? Or is female? Or doesn't worship in any religion at all and thus was never baptized? Requiring that kind of documentation is ridiculous.

Regarding the guns-on-campus issue, Brewer said in a written statement that the bill didn't adequately define the "public right of way" where guns could be carried on public university and community college campuses, and gun laws must be "crystal clear so that gun owners don't become lawbreakers by accident."

She also said the bill was "sloppily written".

That sounds to me like she's a careful administrator and is anxious to move forward with a bill that will stand the test of litigation, which it surely will.

Shouldn't there be an application process at the Federal level when a person files their papers to run for President that requires you to provide proof of birth in the U.S.?  Your application won't be processed until all the requirements are met?  Similar to how you have to provide a birth certificate when you get a driver's license at the DMV.  Or are we just gonna take the work of the prospective candidate that they are a U.S. Citizen as we seem to have done with the current idiot in chief?

I don't think Brewer caved at all.  It looks like she carefully weighed what was best for Arizona, like a good governor should.

The republicans have enough votes to override her veto if they want to push the issue.

I don't know that she caved. This is a woman who has a huge amount on her plate just trying to keep her state safe. And there are plenty of conservatives who either don't have an opinion, think it's water under the bridge at this point, or believe he was born in Hawaii. Personally, I don't know what to think about the whole thing myself. Right now I'd rather concentrate on seeing him defeated. Besides when he no longer has the power of the feds behind him it will probably be easier to get the certificate. Even IF there were some proof he wasn't eligible to be president it would most likely take as long to get through all the legal channels (if you don't think his legal team and even Holder's Justice Dept. wouldn't fight tooth and nail you're delusional) as it would to defeat him in the election.

In the meantime we risk having all the air sucked out of the room as the press takes a heady swirl around the celebrity backwater all coming out in defense of their anointed boy-king (what the hell are they gonna do with the whole Louis XIV set they've designed for his next coronation). Meanwhile, the important issues being discussed by the candidates and his eventual opponent gets lost in the sensationalism. Obama's birth certificate is his blue dress. None of Clinton's issues kept him from being reelected and neither will this. What it will do is create a certain amount of sympathy for him, especially for those who think this is a non issue...unfortunately that's the majority of the country.

Let's defeat him on the merits...then go after his ass when he's a private citizen.
