Classic kids games like kickball deemed unsafe by state in effort to increase summer camp regulation

BY GLENN BLAIN
DAILY NEWS ALBANY BUREAU

Tuesday, April 19th 2011, 4:00 AM

State bureaucrats have created a list of 'risky activities' for kids at summer camp. The list includes freeze tag, Wiffle Ball and kickball, among other games and activities.

ALBANY - State bureaucrats have identified a potentially deadly hazard facing our children this summer - freeze tag.

That's right, officials have decided the age-old street game - along with Wiffle Ball, kickball and dodgeball - poses a "significant risk of injury."

And classics like Capture the Flag, Steal the Bacon and Red Rover are also deemed dangerous in new state regulations for day camps.

I broke my nose for the first time playing kickball.  The next day I was out playing kickball again, even with the stupid big ole bandage.  My Mom made me.  Any time I got hurt doing something, I had to do it right over again.  She said she didn't raise chicken liver kids.

I love kickball.

Building bike ramps 10' high at the bottom of a hill, having bottle rocket wars, playing softball or baseball where if you hit the person with the ball, he's automatically out, having BB gun wars, making bombs out of 12 gauge shotgun shells with their shot removed and inserted into plastic 2-liter plastic bottles, etc., etc., etc. Man, these libs just don't want us to have any fun.

You got that right!!! I played all these games as a child in summer camp and out. It promotes socialism and sportsmanship, not to mention excercise. Then people wonder why our kids have an obesity problem. As children, we get hurt, that is how we learn.

Oh, brother.  It's like the UK now.   ::)  I went over to the article.  Every single comment said essentially 1) this is stupid; 2)this is why kids are fat and wimpy; and 3) why am I still alive?
But the poll they have up, asks for agree/disagree, and something like 53% agreed with this nanny-statism.  WTF?

The congressman who also serves as the dictator/czar of health is a real buttinsky.  If the FDA or other govt beaurocracy has NOT proven that something is NOT harmful, he will want to ban it, just to be on the safe side, calling that "appropriate action."   He is someone's elected rep, but he wants to rule us all.

I'm out in 2 and 1/2 years.

Kickball can be dangerous... and that's why it's FUN!

I've been hit in the face with those balls... it freaking hurts.  But you get over it quickly and continue to play.  Kickball was the best game from my childhood.  It's a shame some people want to take it away from children.  :(

This is just plain ludicrous. Society has gotten so risk adverse these days. :mental: I played kickball as a kid too. It was fun, like dodgeball.  :-)

Did you mean socialization? Or Socialism? I don't think any of the things I did promoted socialism.

One game that was brutal ,but fun was battleship or Pirateship. All the kids were in the middle of a field and there were four invisible places of a ship,  stern, port, bow. starbourd. The winner has to rely on their memory and speed. It was funny to see fifty kids going in 4 different directions. The smaller kids kept getting trampled however.

Ritchie said the regulations could cripple small recreational programs, forcing them to pay a $200 fee to register as a summer camp and provide medical staff.

I'm sure money and unions have nothing to do with this.

Ritchie said the regulations...

Thundley, I missed that quote when I skimmed the article.  Patty Ritchie is my NY congresscritter, we swung from D to R & I had her sign in my yard.  She's got common sense, I like her so far.  I wrote her a couple times about NY banning the e-cig.  She wrote back and basically said, "Relax.  We've got bigger fish to fry right now."

Laughingman, last summer we invited some pals over for the afternoon.  One brought the original lawn darts.  It was AWESOME.

I used to play with Chemistry sets and a little toy machine that melted plastic blanks to make "copies" of stuff, not to mention  kickball, baseball (hardball), dodgeball, jumping off of swings at their apogee, had bike wrecks, made "go-karts" out of lawnmower wheels, etc etc etc. I made it out alive.

As Reb said, BB gun wars, tackle football w/o pads, makeshift bike ramps, etc. That was the good stuff.

The pussifacation of America. Limp wristed weenies are easier to control.
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."
