Obama administration unveils online ID system
« on: April 16, 2011, 12:24:04 PM »

A  plan to create a national online identity system was launched today to help combat cyber crime.

Commerce Secretary Gary Locke claimed the move will protect Internet consumers from fraud and identity theft.

National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace is voluntary, but IT experts believe it is inevitable that users will have one ID for transactions in the future

Mr Locke said it would mean people would no longer have to remember a variety of different passwords to do business and social networking online.

You're not smart enough to handle your own private affairs.  Therefore, we've created a new government agency to manage them for you.

1) this is an Obama Non-Legislative edict.
2) Voluntary...only at first. Step one always sounds good.
3) Only one ID for online transactions makes EASIER for ID theft.
4) this isn't about protection or ID theft at all. This is all about knowing who is saying what online.
This is control, not protection.

644 days.

Thanks.  That's the maximum time limit for how long this plan will be "voluntary."

...and it's been opposed by those of us on the right no matter WHO the hell is in office. You were saying?

Watch a Tea Party rally and you'll see people proudly raising the American flag and showing pride in U.S. heroes such as Thomas Jefferson. Watch an OWS rally and you'll see people burning the American flag while showing pride in communist heroes such as Che Guevera. --Bob, from some news site

Just wondering: with the recent hacking of Sony's Playstation Network and theft of personal information of approx 75M customers of that network, what would have happened if these "single online IDs" had been stolen? You'd need to go through a gov't bureaucracy to get a new one, wouldn't you? Why, that sounds ever so efficient...

no problem.  They will just tattoo your ID number on your forehead so that it will be linked specifically to you and only you.  Problem is, the id # will most likely begin with the prefix 666.
