I have spent hours, literally, explaining what is to me Junior High School physics, sans the math. I mean I had four years of Physics, between Junior HS and HS, and no, I did not attend an elite school. It was just the way it was. Your school wanted to be certified first by the Department of Education (federal) and then the National University, the Curriculum was pretty much set in stone.

I also took four years of Math... biology and chemistry... only reason I did not get a fifth was... well I was gonna become a historian.

But here is where this becomes part of the crisis. Think about it. I got my education in a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY. (Granted graduation rates are actually lower than the US)... and I had to get all this shit. You know understanding how fission works, or genetics, or what is an exothermic (a reaction that generates heat) versus and endothermic (A reaction that draws heat and becomes cold) is not alien to me. It was the things one learned and oh chemical bonds... and what happens when they break... oy... I hated those equations.

Think about competitiveness. Think how this affects our ability to have a capable work force for the 21ast century, one beyond would you like fries with that?

There is more... if on top of this science you also force people to take quite a bit of history and civics.... in other words, to keep the population dumb and stupid we have shot ourselves in the foot.

Yes soon we will join Third World Economies, to the same level of ignorant populations... prayze be the chosen religion. And that, quite frankly, is part of the crisis.

I guess I should do a write up on really basic physics, sans the math, on my blog. So people can understand what a fission reaction is, in general, I am sure a few here can... and what things mean. Oh and yes I will keep the math off it... on and sievrets, are still driving me nuts.

Oh and for the record I HATED physics... ah a famous mental exercise involving a monkey and a pendulum... still gives me nightmares. I promise, to understand this at the most basic of levels, you do not need to solve the Bozeman equation... I promise.

With the few posts mentioning nadin I decided to row over to the Elm Tree to see what was happening. Apparently she agrees that having liberals in charge of education is dumbing down the country. Of course, she probably doesn't realize this is what she's agreeing to.

Yeah, she probably doesn't.

One also gets the impression she's subtly trying to educate the elmers on her qualifications, so as to forestall any disagreement with her about all scientific issues.

Oh us poor stoopid Murecans. 

She is lying through her teeth, again.  Education systems in other countries don't match up to ours exactly.   She might have covered in four years of physics what is covered in two years of physics and chemistry in an American high school.  I can safely guarantee she didn't do much fission mathematics at any level in high school.

I seem to remember math being a big thing at my high school, we had to take four years, and completion of at least high school Algebra I was required, pre-calculus was the minumum for college preparatory classes.  Chemistry was required, physics was required for the sunshine scholarship.  World history, US history, economics, and civics were also required.  We observed exothermic and endothremic chemical reactions in chemistry.  We broke down the math for them in chemistry and physics.

Actually the 4 years of physics was the same class.  It just took her 4 years to pass HS physics.  :loser:

Physics without the math?  You're not going to have a very easy time of it then.  

And NO, Physics typically isn't taught until junior or senior year of HS, and then pre-Calc or Algebra II is a requirement.  And actually, a lot of states are going to the, "Integrated Science" concept, which is really nothing more than a piss-poor hodgepodge of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, but is more General Science with very little lab work.

Oh, and nadin?  Learn to construct a proper sentence.  Words the sense are not you making order the in them use.  What you SHOULD have said is that the crises you cite are evidence of a population with a poor education in science.  I mean, seriously, if you're going to waste the entire bandwidth of the Internet, do in fact be so kind as to 1--make more sense than a vesta post, 2--stop using big words that are incorrect for the use you have applied to them, which makes you sound idiotic (think Don King), 3--THINK before you post.

Oh, and nadin?  Here's a little personal experience vis-a-vis my HS math and science background:

Math: 8th-Algebra, 9th-Geometry, 10th-Algebra II, 11th-Trig/Pre-Calc, 12th-AP Calculus.

Science: 8th-General, 9th-General, 10th-Honors Biology, Physics, 11th-Advanced Chemistry I, 12th-Advanced Chem II/AP Physics.

Oh, and then there's that degree I have, my 12 years in the Naval Nuclear Power Program (Reactor Operator, radcon tour, etc.), and my current employment at a nuclear power plant.  So please, if you just so happen to read this, please keep this little tidbit in mind:

YOU DON'T HAVE A ****ING CLUE AS TO WHAT YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT.

Yeah, that's similar to my class load in those disciplines at the time.  I don't think Physics by itself was even offered in Junior High.  Whatever we learned was part of the general science class.
