Donald Ian Rankin (1000+ posts) Sat Apr-02-11 08:56 AMOriginal message What are and are not acceptable condemnations of a religion on DU, please? Could you give some clarification on how far it is and is not permissible to go in criticising religions on DU, please? The rules are very clear on (not) insulting groups of people, but they aren't so clear on attacks on ideas, and those usually amount to an indirect attack on the group of people who hold that idea. It's obvious to me from the rules that "all followers of religion X are wicked" is not allowed, but can you give me any clarification on how far it is and isn't acceptable to go in condemning religions teachings, please?Does it make a difference if I specify "The teachings of this religion, as interpreted by the majority of its followers", "The teachings of this religion, as I understand them" as opposed to just "The teachings of this religion"?Also, how far is it permissible to go in criticising/insulting/condemning religious figures like Jesus and Mohammed, please?
Skinner ADMIN (1000+ posts) Tue Apr-05-11 01:13 PMfranksolich's FELLOW ALUM SKINSResponse to Original message 1. I think this is one of those "I know it when I see it" things. I think a substantive discussion about whether one agrees/disagrees with or believes/disbelieves the teachings of any religion, along with an explanation of why, should always be permitted. But there is a fuzzy line when "substantive discussion" gives way to something that isn't substantive and isn't discussion. If you make an effort to stick to substance, and stay away from overhot rhetoric, you should be fine.
