MO Redistricting Map Eliminates Carnahan District

A map submitted for consideration of the House Redistricting Committee by its chair, Rep. John Diehl, R-Town and Country, shows the congressional district currently represented by Congressman Russ Carnahan, D-St. Louis, absorbed by the three congressional districts that currently border it…

…The map also shifts northwest Missouri congressman Sam Graves’ district to include almost every county north of the Missouri River from the western border of the state to the eastern border.

Another significant shift appears to have been made in mid-Missouri where the city of Columbia and Boone County, traditional Democratic strongholds, have been shifted out of the district represented by current Ninth District Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer and placed into the district of freshman U.S. Rep. Vicky Hartzler, R-Harrisonville.

I forget.

Did Missouri lose a congressional seat in this census?

Missouri loses one congressional district in 2013 as the result of the reapportionment process that took place after the 2010 U.S. Census.

Does it take three years to do redistricting?  When do the new districts take effect? 2014?

That's a long time to wait.

Thanks, sir: I wasn't sure.

With the (R)s in control of so many state legislatures, due to the gross incompetence and corruption of (D)s everywhere, I think there's possibilities, even if a state hasn't lost a seat or two, of realigning congressional districts so as to make them more rational.

I wondered if Missouri was one of those, seeking geographic rationality in districts.

Throwing Columbia into Hartzler's district isn't good for her, it was held by a D (Skelton) for many, many years before she won in a surprising upset this term.

No, they have to be done for the elections of 2012, no later.

We have a situation here in Nebraska, which didn't lose any seats, where the pink 1st congressional district (Jeff Fortenberry) becomes deep red, with the addition of western Omaha (thus diluting the effect of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln), and the 2nd congressional district (Lee Terry) goes from pink to neutral.

But conventional wisdom at the moment insists the 2nd district will remain red, at least for 2012.

That is, unless Omaha Steve from Skins's island jumps into the race.

Yeah, but it puts Jeff City in Luetkemeyer's district (where I'm at) which makes things interesting.

There are a helluva lot of moonbats in Columbia, that's for sure.

I believe they prefer to call 'em "communes".  :-)

It's a lot like my old hometown in Indiana...modest-sized city with its affairs and electorate dominated by a very large land-grant university.
