You know, this debate has sparked too much anger on both sides when really, we should be focusing on education reform and the unions. First off, we should be embracing school choices by re-directing funds away from public education and into the form of vouchers for low-income families to send their kids to private school. The poor should have choices where to send their kids to school, they should not have to send their kids to a run-down school where there are a lot of problems. By doing so, you reduce the power of the unions and teachers have two choices: either pay into their own benefits and take less of a pay increase each year, or be unemployed.
I attended a town hall meeting with my Governor (not Walker.) These three Moms from a wealthy district stood up and began complaining about the Governor's education proposals (and accomplishments) when they lived in a wealthy district and clearly had to have money to live there. If these wealthy folks can attend a town hall meeting in the middle of the week, they can sure as heck send their kids to a charter or private school.
