My nephew went to the hospital tonight after getting bit by some fire ants. Turns out, he's allergic to them.
He's going to live! I went to the hospital after I got off work and he was hooked up to an IV and already looking much better. My SIL said his face was so swollen he could barely open his eyes and had hives all over him when they took him to the clinic. (The clinic then sent him to the hospital.) It looks like he got bit about 20-30 times on his right arm.
He said the ambulance ride was fun, though they only used the siren when going through the lights. He said the people were nice, and he found out that the driver was an Eagle Scout (Jared's a cub scout). He also thought it was cool to see his heartbeat on the screen. The clinic had given him two shots of adrenaline, so his heart beat was all kids of crazy. Oh and they did not use the paddle on him, I asked.
He was a little cranky and ready to go home by 10pm, but overall a very brave boy tonight. He's a fan of American Gladiators so we chatted about that for a while. And he wanted another pop sickle, so I told him he needed to look pathetic and try to squeeze out a tear for that, but he kept laughing. He was released a little after 11pm to go home.
My brother and SIL got a prescription for an epi-pen. My other nephew is allergic to peanuts, so they're used to carrying it around. And my brother told the younger one, Nathan, while Jared was all puffed up and red "that's what will happen to you if you eat a peanut." So even if Nathan ever out grows his allergy, he'll still never eat peanuts.
I was really worried when my brother called and said Jared was heading to the hospital, so I'm very thankful that he's a-okay.
Here's a pic of the goober from his first day of school last September.
