Obama: Some Pennsylvania voters 'bitter'

WASHINGTON, April 11 (UPI) -- Presidential hopeful Barack Obama is being criticized for saying some Pennsylvania voters "cling to guns or religion or antipathy" out of political frustration.

The remark was contained in an audiotape posted online at The Huffington Post, The Washington Post said Friday. On the tape, which was made at a San Francisco fundraiser, Obama said Pennsylvanians' frustrations come in part from failed domestic policies.

"You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them," he said.

Obama said both the Clinton and Bush administrations have let voters down.

"And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustration."

An adviser to presumptive Republican nominee John McCain said Obama's comment revealed "an elitism and condescension towards hardworking Americans that is nothing short of breathtaking."

Obama rival Hillary Clinton told a Pennsylvania audience Friday people in the state are "resilient" and "optimistic."

"Pennsylvanians don't need a president who looks down on them," she said. "They need a president who stands up for them, who fights for them."

He really is a classic example of a "Not Ready For Prime Time" politician.  Ever since the spell broke and the media finally started asking a few questions and the Clinton attack machine swung into full gear, he's been flailing around trying to sound serious and stepping on his d*ck in the process. :loser:

God help us if he ever becomes POTUS.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

team hillary is attacking him for being "out of touch", which is probably the wrong angle of
attack, but what he said is what liberals really think, so what can she really do?

he is pretty much just sarcastically saying that hillary and maccain are calling HIM out of touch?
because, of course, everyone knows how cool he is  .. . . .

the MSM is pretty revved up about it.

Obama says he erred in comments on "bitter" voters

MUNCIE, Indiana (Reuters) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, attacked by his rivals as an elitist for describing small-town voters as people who "cling to guns or religion," said on Saturday he erred in how he expressed the concerns of those voters.

Obama was accused by Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican John McCain of taking a condescending view of working-class voters after video surfaced of him speaking at a private fund-raiser last weekend where he sought to explain the concerns of some Pennsylvania voters.

Those voters were "bitter" about job losses and other economic woes and so "they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations," Obama, an Illinois senator, said.

After facing a barrage of criticism from New York Sen. Clinton and Arizona Sen. McCain, Obama told a campaign rally in Muncie, Indiana, his description was clumsy and did not convey his meaning.

"I didn't say it as well as I should have," said Obama, who is vying with Clinton for the Democratic nomination and the right to run in November against presumptive Republican nominee McCain.

Obama said he believed many voters were indeed bitter about the economy and he meant to say "when you're bitter you turn to what you can count on."

"So people -- they vote about guns, or they take comfort from their faith and their family and their community," he said. But he said he had not meant to imply that was a bad thing.

I was wondering if the fact that this guy was a professor would factor into the campaign, and
perhaps this is it.  for a good part of his life, he lectured kids, and what he said was the way it
was.  it just isn't that way anymore;  just because he says that small town folks are bitter about
things and hide behind guns and God doesn't mean that we all furiously scribble it down in our spiral
notebooks.

I wonder if he totally understands that . . . .

now he misspoke.

Sen. Barack Obama acknowledged that he chose his words poorly when describing small-town Pennsylvanians at a fundraiser on Sunday. But he didn't back off the message he had sought to convey.

"I didn't say it as well as I should have," Obama conceded before a crowd in Muncie, Ind., this morning, as Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republicans prepared to hammer him for a second day.

translation : "I am sorry that there was a microphone handy when I called them crackers."  does this guy truly understand that he is running for president of the united states?  people pay attention to what you say when you do that.

“Now, I didn’t say it as well as I should have,” Mr. Obama said, speaking to hundreds of Indiana voters at a rally on Saturday. “Because the truth is that these traditions that are passed on from generation to generation, those are important, that’s what sustains us. But what is absolutely true is that people don’t feel like they are being listened to.”
.
.
.
“Lately, there’s been a little typical sort of political flare-up because I said something that everybody knows is true, which is that there are a whole bunch of folks in small towns in Pennsylvania, in towns right here in Indiana, in my hometown in Illinois, who are bitter,” Mr. Obama said Saturday. “They are angry, they feel like they’ve been left behind. They feel like nobody’s paying attention to what they’re going through.”

As the audience listened nearly in silence, he added: “So I said, well you know, when you’re bitter, you turn to what you can count on. So people vote, they vote about guns or they take comfort from their faith and their family and their community and they get mad about illegal immigrants who are coming over to this country or they get frustrated about how things are changing. That’s a natural response.”

Mr. Obama urged voters to “get past the distractions of our politics” and vote their economic interests.

i have no idea what the hell is is trying to say regarding tradition, but he is coming pretty close to accusing anyone that criticizes him of being part of the problem that he is trying to change.

Haha, the snob picture illustrates what I've always thought about Barack Hussein Obama - an uppity, over-educated elitist jerk who really isn't such a great public speaker after all. What part of San Francisco was he speaking from at the time, (s)Nob Hill? That's where he belongs.

I think it may have been one of those "got tired and said something stupid" (i.e., told the
truth) moments.  his primary campaign has been fairly effortless since super tuesday;  he
doesn't know the depths of tired until the general election starts.

this guy may be pretty entertaining about, say, october.

this guy is spinning this sucker so hard it's guts are gonna fly out of it's nose. :-)  he isn't apologizing for what
he said, he's apologizing for not saying it right.  I wonder if there are bitter, angry, gun owning, immigrant hating,
protectionist trading (and I still don't understand that one :-)) God loving people in cities . . .  :whatever:

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Speaking to a crowd of more than 2,500 at Ball State University today, Sen. Barack Obama tried for a second time to defuse the controversy that has erupted over remarks he made earlier this week at a San Francisco fundraising event that he dismissed as "a typical political flare up."

"I said something that everybody knows is true," Obama told the Muncie crowd. "There are a whole bunch of folks in small towns in Pennsylvania and towns right here in Indiana and my hometown in Illinois who are bitter, angry. They feel like they've been left behind. They feel like nobody's paying attention to what they're going through. So I said, 'Well you know, when you're bitter, you turn to what you can count on.' So people, they vote about guns or they take comfort from their faith and their families and their communities. And they get mad about illegal immigrants who are coming over to this country. Or they get frustrated about how things have changed."

His comments have been blasted by his rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, and also the campaign of the presumptive Republican nominee, Sen. John McCain, as elitist, demeaning and condescending.

Obama admitted that "I didn't say it as well as I should have."

But, he added, "What is absolutely true is that people don't feel like they're being listened to. So they pray and they count on each other and they count on their families. You know this in your own lives. And what we need is a federal government that is actually paying attention. A government that is fighting for working people day in and day out making sure that we are trying to allow them to live out the American dream and that's what this campaign is about. ... We've got to get past the distractions of our politics and fight for each other, and that's why I'm running for president of the United States."

Okay, I'm gonna take a crack at him now that I've heard what he said.  :-) :hammer:

People vote on things like guns and gay marriage because they hold beliefs about those things. They have a moral compass. It doesn’t waver depending on what some poll shows.
And this bozo wants to lead this country as president? He’s an idiot. All marketing and no substance. That would be a joke if it wasn’t such a scary thought.

Let me explain something to you Barackstar!, you elitist little twerp. I don’t "cling" to anything. My stances on gun rights, God, and ILLEGAL immigrants are well-reasoned and developed by looking at reality, not some fairyland vaguely describe as "hope". Your liberal, communist idiotic self has shown through. Again. Either that or you have made yet another naive statement that shows you don’t have a ******* clue what this country is about or a damn thing about the hearts of her people.

You know, in a strange way I can see where you thought you were going with this. It IS a shame that three administrations have let the smaller towns, the heart and soul of our country, languish. But I will tell you this...they sure as hell don’t need your holier than thou self telling them how ignorant they are clinging to religion and guns. Here’s a clue for you: real faith is tested when things go bad. What you foolishly call “clinging” I see as real faith. Think about it.

Guns? Immigration? (Oh, it’s ILLEGAL immigration we hate. You kind of left that word out).

Excuse us, but those are all guaranteed rights of our Constitution. Bearing arms, a secure border. Freedom to worship. But them you don’t think too much of that document either, do you?

And bitter? I’ll show you bitter. You remember Hurricane Katrina? I bet you do, since all those enlightened liberals down there are still whining and complaining about the fact that the government didn’t build them a 4000 square foot home and give them thousands of dollars in apologist money. How many years and they still have their hand out?

Let’s contrast that with those small town hillbilly rednecks you so callously slam. Remember the tornadoes in early February? I do. It tore the crap out of homes and businesses down in the redneck south where my family lives. You hear any complaining. ***hole? Nope, Because those rednecks rolled up our sleeves and went to work, helping out neighbors and rebuilding their communities. No bitching on the nightly news, no looting, no whining. They put their trust in God and something called personal responsibility. That last term may be something you have to look up. I’m quite sure it’s not in your personal vocabulary.

Clinging to religion? Really? We call it Commitment. Faith. I’m quite sure you don’t understand that, since your religion…what you believe about God and His place in this universe seems a little…er.. “fuzzy” at times.

In case you still haven't gotten it... I'm not buying your Hope Snake Oil routine.

A strategist for Sen. McCain (R-Ariz.) also joined in the criticism. "Instead of apologizing to small-town Americans for dismissing their values, Barack Obama arrogantly tried to spin his way out of his outrageous San Francisco remarks," said campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds. "You can't be more out of touch than that."

this gaffe, combined with the "typical white people" screw up and his "words matter" speech, would make
for a nice attack ad in october.
