The problem is that she does not see herself as arrogant or condescending. In her mind, she is so overwhelmingly superior to her DUmpmates, her tireless effort to educate them is noble work. She has to talk down to them because they are so deeply inferior to her they could not possibly understand if she tried to speak seriously.

She feels sort of like a Christian missionary in the Amazon basin. The natives may periodically revert to boiling their neighbors for dinner and shrinking their heads, but she forgives them and continues resolutely trying to bring them into the light.
