Since it's the weekend before St. Patrick's Day
« on: March 12, 2011, 06:09:11 PM »
Which used to mean something to me, but now it means "amateur night...."

I thought I'd share a song that I've been stuck on...

The bars are full of "Weekend Irish" tonight...

Post some Celtic songs, baby!
Let nothing trouble you,
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing;
God never changes.
Patience attains all that it strives for.
He who has God lacks nothing:
God alone suffices.
--St. Theresa of Avila

Great, just where in 300 + year's do the Irish Orange men fit in ????

Talk about the bloody religious and political wars,  this one has been going on for all this time until about 10 years ago and who knows when the gun running to the IRA will start up again.

I have a wee bit of Irish blood in me and I love the traditions and dancing, the drinking and carousing of the Green Men, but what is an Orange Man to do on St. Patricks Day, do we put aside the past on that day, join in, or duck and cover.????

I don't drink whiskey, but did a fine job with GreyGoose dirty martinis Friday night. Does that count?  :lmao:

We'll be having corned beef and cabbage on Thursday night.  :yahoo:
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

When I drank whiskey, one of my favorites was Jameson's. Or Old Bushmills. Or Tullamore Dew. Or Clontarf.

 :-)

Corned beef is fine, but cooked cabbage just rips me up.

When I went to Ireland, several years ago with 30 some women, we went on a tour of the Jameson's Distillery.

Neat place, they gave out free samples, too.

Really sucked to be the only sober one in the group - IN IRELAND!!!  :bawl:

The tour was the morning after we arrived, and many of the them were having jet lag. Nothing worse than being with some old women - who are slightly bitchy on "nice" days, who are tired and had several shots of Jameson's.

We got out of there, were headed - uh, herded, I mean...towards the downtown area for lunch. They turned a corner and I kept going straight, after telling my "roomie" who was the tour organizer...I would see her back at the hotel.

I went and walked through a bunch of antique shops, had a little snack, walked through a Mark and Spencer's grocery department ( I was in heaven!!) and walked into a pub. Apparently not something done by single women in the mid-afternoon. At least not in this one. Nor do they sit at the bar. :shucks: Once I finally got waited on, I was delighted to find a lovely vodka. Met several very nice Irishmen, and a couple of very flirty Englishmen and their sons who were there for a soccer match.  :naughty:  Had a delightful couple of hours, took a cab back to hotel. And walked into the group of even more tired and bitchier women. Wishing within two minutes, that I could have gone back to the pub.  :thatsright:

Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Save the Earth... it's the only planet with chocolate.

 :lmao:   Nice story, deb!

But did it occur to you that maybe your mistake to begin with was doing Ireland with 30 tired and bitchy women?

For that reason, I'll never ever ever again do a bus tour. Especially with older folks.

In 2002 we did a bus tour of parts of Germany -- most of which I'd seen before, but wth -- that included not just the contents of one bus, but THREE buses. Try stopping at a Rasthof with 150 geezers sometime. FML.....

Our bus "captain" was this old retired command sergeant major who thought he was still in the Army. Couldn't stay off the damned microphone.

One morning, after a bunch of 'em had whooped it up the night before, the bus left at about 8 a.m. Things were quiet what with all the hangovers and such. Until the bus "captain" picked up the microphone and yelled,

"Hey!! All you alcoholics!! Just lookit up there on the hill!! Them's vin-yards up there. They make the grapes and squeezes 'em and puts it in a barrel and before you know it -- WINE!!!"

YJCMTSU......

Going with them was the only way I could afford to go.

Went to Ireland on one, through Italy on another, and the last one was Munich, Prague, Budapest, Vienna and Strasbourg. Each trip was 12 days for $2000. That was airfare on Delta from here, bus, lodging, all breakfasts, and about half the dinners. Plus included getting into places like Jameson's.

Twelve days shopping and eating my way through a European country ...I can deal with bitchy old women to do that!!  :-)

I like a whole bunch of Irish music.

This is the third year I'll have two St. Patrick's Days.  The traditional and then a group of us from three states descend on a small hotel later in the spring and celebrate again.

Take your choice. Only good thing NPR ever had.

Come to think of it, unions do create jobs. Companies have to hire two workers to do the work of one.
