Democrats really the party of freedom and freedom of speech?
Freedoms and Freedom of speech is a very big voting issue for me. I am on the fence when it comes to abortion, but I believe in decriminalizing marijuana, people should be able to watch what they want on tv, prostitution should be legalized as well

The democratic party is probably the best bet for having these things become a reality one day, but some other things irk me about the democratic party. I do not see how the "fairness doctrin" is a good thing. It stifles free speech. Either you have a good product or not. If you don't get the ratings, you should not be on the air.

Also I hate how the Liberals have to force their opinion on everybody. If people want to smoke and take chances with their health, let them. Or how about forcing schools to take out candy and other sweets. Ok i'm off my soapbox now. thx for listening
Shawn8 just learned a valuable lesson...Hit the primitives with truth..Get your skull cracked with the stone :lmao: :-) A name we all know and love pops up :-)

13. Taking candy out of school is a great idea
Doesn't enable youthful bad eating habits. America is full of fat-assed kids who don't play outside enough. When a principle (allowing candy and sugary drinks in school because, by God, this is a free country) is not practical (i.e., fat kids are not happy, healthy, and will likely need more medical care earlier), then the principle needs to be reexamined.

I mean, would it be a good idea to put beer machines in schools, if the law didn't prohibit it? We would be free to do so.

I can never understand why we have to have laws when we could choose to exercise an ounce of "common sense." The latter is much less into the taxpayers' pocketbook.
:-) And of course the abortion queen :-)

I did not say I agreed or disagreed with abortion. Why the hostility? Perhaps a nice glass of wine would help?

22. I once thought exactly as you did
I was 100 percent pro choice. I felt very strongly about it. Someone challenged me to take a look at aborted fetus's and it kind of changed my opinion. I am still pro choice, but some of those fetus's were awfully developed, especially the partial birth ones.

25. That is why people stereotype liberals
Is because of people like you, there is no room for discussion and you certainly have the take my ball and go home attitude. If you did not care, you would not be posting

50. there is no such thing as "partial birth abortion"
As written above (by el pinko) that procedure was so rare that you could count a year's worth on one hand. What a purely symbolic law.

23. Well as someone who agrees with ya to some extent, here is my view on it all
There are many republicans out there who are doing the same thing - especially when it comes to smokers and the rights of people who own businesses to make their own decisions (and that is what the whole smoking debate is really about, freedom of association).

Our party is progressive - but to me there are some areas they are more regressive about (I think they right attitude is there, just the wrong delivery method). Guns and smoking are two big ones, as well as seat belts, etc - but overall, liberal democrats are the ones promoting freedom of people to be able to be themselves.

The one thing you will see on Du that you won't see on FR and other places of it's kind is that people will not always agree - from drugs to smoking liberals duke it out here, and in the bigger picture (when it comes to legislation) you will see people on all sides of issues.

I think liberals are dead wrong on some things, and I am able to argue that within our party without being seen as all too crazy (ok, well - most people here probably see the Ole Straight Story as a little crazy....). But I also think we are spot on when it comes to many, many, more issues.

No party is perfect, and the bigger the tent the more we argue. But at least we are open minded and willing to listen to one another.

And in the end, we actually learn a lot. I think we are wrong on the smoking thing, but I have learned to understand and respect the whole thing about people working at places that allow smoking. There is a balance between worker rights and a safe environment, but to me there is also a balance between adults who agree to work in such a place and adults who choose to go there.

Sometimes the left can be just as prudish as the right, but at least on the left we are willing to hear other ideas and not be stuck in some stone age view of things.
What liberal site is he referring to cuz it ain't the DUmp!!!  :lmao:

58. What the hell makes you think this is a place for "debate"?
This is a DISCUSSION FORUM for LIBERAL DEMOCRATS. You fall to the far right of that, where as I fall to the left of it. My presence is tolerated here because I don't go out of my way to antagonize the liberals or "debate" with them why democratic socialism is better than the slightly-fettered capitalist model liberals favor.

You might want to keep in mind that your presence here is also contingent on your not pissing off the liberals with a bunch of RW/libertarian talking points. It's one thing to come in here and say you believe in this and that, but to claim that all liberals want to ban all smoking, or tell us that dems voted for the war like we never heard about it before is another. The democratic party may stand for protecting the first amendment. But this is a privately owned website with a specific ideological bent. It doesn't owe you a platform to spout your views.

Well, he's right on that!

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Shawn8 is trying to find out where he fits in the political landscape. He'll learn soon enough, with the help of the DUmmies, that Democrats are not free speech at all.

Just one little question.....Whose bright idea was it to raise hell for the "freedom" to purchase junk food in the schools to begin with? You couldn't even bring it to school when I went.
“The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948
