I took a bus trip from San Fran to southern Cal. when I was about 26 to visit a friend I had not seen in 5 years.
We spent 3 days together, had a great time and she and husband also a long time friend drove me back to the bus station to go home to Vallejo.
Friends husband did not take the highway instead took a short cut down 2 lane roads in the desert. He told me about all the cactus plants and wild life out there and we passed a sign that an area was a preserve for some kind of bug that was indangered.
The friends husband who was driving became a bit rattled as I told him this is great, we must preserve all we can. all life is precious and needed to be kept alive.
I might have well lit a fire under his Ass, wow did he go off on me.
Your children and my children are whats important to the world, why put the life of a bug above human needs. These bugs live on top of a deep water well that could be pumping clean fresh water into homes for people that need it.
He was no, back then a tree hugger. Sort of a rant that our children come before fish, snails and puppy dog tails. He was not but a few years older then me and so set in his ways.
What about the balance of life, our environment will change drastically if we kill off or allow the extinction of just on species, I asked.
Lies he told me, nature will adjust and go on. May take time but all will work out in the end. Then he hit me with a big one---
If it came down to your children's lives and having desert rats, what would you choose??
How interesting that that half hour ride has stayed with me all these years. This was my introduction into Conservative thinking.
