They'll be wearing red, and they won't make noise.

Members of the Portage Education Association - the union representing teachers in the Portage School District - plan a silent demonstration at 5:30 p.m. today near the Columbia County Courthouse, 400 DeWitt St., to show their solidarity not only with public school teachers but with all public employees who would lose most of their collective bargaining power if Gov. Scott Walker's bill passes the Wisconsin Legislature.

Son of a bitch! Very disappointed to hear about this. "Hammer" was my 2nd grade teacher. I loved him. Good teacher. Good guy. I have a personal relationship with this now. Haven't decided if I'm going to walk through town later to see what's going on or not. This just sucks.

We just got collective bargaining here in Texas and I'm not even sure what the hell it does.

Hi,

This situation is very disturbing to me.  While we all had teachers we loved, if we think about it we all have carpenters, bricklayers and other we care about who are in unions.  To me it is the corruption and the communist agenda at the top that is the problem and the rank and file need to overthrow them just like BO's agenda got nailed in the last elections.

A friend of mine sent me a beautiful piece this morning about thanking a teacher and I wrote him back and said I agreed but have a big problem with the NEA.

If you really want the culprit it is the damn elected officials that gave away the store over the years because they did not have the courage to stand up against the unions, while the public was asleep at the switch thinking they were doing their job.

regards,

Gee, those cheesehead teachers wouldn't throw the kids under the school bus, would they? Nah, of course not!
THey wouldn't do anything rash like bring the kids out into the streets to protest for the union would they? Nah, of course not!
Would they? Nah, they would certainly put the education and welfare of the children above all that and demostrate by example that redress of grievances has a proper time, place and method, right?

I want to hear from the parent's about all of this.  Not everyone in Wisconsin is a liberal/progressive.  There are plenty of upset parent's who had to scramble to find care for their children when schools were shut down yesterday.  Not sure if they are shut down today or not.

Is Wisconsin the state that requires people that babysit kids in their home to join a union?  :fuelfire:

Today on Fox I heard Wisconsin has 300,000 public sector employees. Googled up the figure of 5,714,588 as the present population of the state (not counting illegals, of course).

That works out to 1 public employee for every 19 people in Wisconsin, seems a wee tad bloated to me.

I don't think so... but I've never had to hire a babysitter in Wisconsin.

Obama Administration Is Behind the “Day of Rage” in Wisconsin

The Democratic National Committee’s Organizing for America arm – the remnant of the 2008 Obama campaign — is playing an active role in organizing protests against Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker’s attempt to strip most public employees of collective bargaining rights.

OfA, as the campaign group is known, has been criticized at times for staying out of local issues like same-sex marraige, but it’s riding to the aide of the public sector unions who hoping to persuade some Republican legislators to oppose Walker’s plan. And while Obama may have his difference with teachers unions, OfA’s engagement with the fight — and Obama’s own clear stance against Walker — mean that he’s remaining loyal to key Democratic Party allies at what is, for them, a very dangerous moment.

I saw a quote on FOX during Cavuto that Obama calls this an "attack on unions".  I don't see that to be true at all.  Everyone I know has to contribute to their own health insurance and retirement plans.  Why can't these idiots understand that all of these states, not just Wisconsin, are broke and cannot fund half the shit they want handed to them?

Protesters are starting to desacrate the Capitol. Magic marker in bathroom stalls, sticking things on the marble around the Capitol, trash everywhere. Stay classy, Madison!

We're getting to the point where we have our own personal Greece in the cheese state.

This is a status from a Madison police officer on Facebook.  I went to school with her from second grade until senior year of high school.

Quote
I walked out to the Square for a minute, and I am AMAZED at all the people. It's a really electric atmosphere. I have to say one thing for Walker: I've never personally seen so many people voluntarily unite for a cause, all in one location. Too bad for him, it's against him!

Voluntarily?  HARDLY!  Those people were bussed into the Capitol.
