Line between unions and mafia continue to blur

Cops booted an unruly group of city teachers union officials from a posh Albany eatery after they caused a ruckus over their dinner tab, the Daily News has learned.

Paul Egan, the union’s political and legislative director, set off the fracas – claiming the quail he was served, and finished, wasn’t large enough – sources said.

Egan and about two dozen other members of the United Federation of Teachers spread over three tables at the swank bistro Marché inside 74 State, a boutique hotel down the block from the state Capitol.

And with Egan apparently worked into a froth over the size of his quail in the $40 prix fixe meal, union members looked on without paying the group’s bill.

Egan began shouting and demanded to see the manager. The restaurant’s owner soon appeared, and pleaded with Egan to calm down, sources said.

When he didn’t, restaurant staffers called the cops.

Personally, I'm a little shocked and surprised that a group that makes its money screaming and ranting to extract concessions from people would carry-on in such a manner.

So much for the restaurant that was running the pilot program on serving smaller portions like 'Chelle suggested.

A source with ties to the union said it's not the first time Egan has been kicked out of a restaurant after making a scene.

"He's done this more than once, though he never got escorted out by the police before that I know of," the source said.

The source recounted Egan loudly complaining during a Christmas-time lunch that he didn't get enough meatloaf and mashed potatoes.

Another little story for you.

1985...Right after separating from first wife, me and a big old country boy was in Crystal River Florida so he could get his Advanced Open Water Scuba certification. We went out to eat one night at this right nice place. The table next to ours was occupied by 2 Yankee couples. One of the Yankee guys was fussing and complaining loudly the whole time we were trying to eat. He was vulgar to the extreme. Big Boy leans over to me during our meal and says in a whisper, "I just hate a damn Yankee. The very sound of their voice just grates my nerves."

We got up and went to pay up and the loud mouth Yankee cuts in front of us. He demands to speak to the manager. They hunt up the manager and he listens to the loud mouths complaints. Manager tells the loud mouth if the food and service was that bad he doesn't have to pay. Big Boy was standing behind Loudmouth and when he heard the manager say Loudmouth wouldn't have to pay, he went off like a rocket. He said something to the effect of, "Just wait a damn minute here. If the food was so bad, how come he cleaned his plate...We couldn't enjoy our meal for his loud mouth. Now if you let him out of here without paying, I'm going to whup your ass and his too." I thought for sure we were going to have to fight. When Loudmouth turned to see who was making a fuss about his bitching, there stood Big Boy, all 6'8" 280 pounds of long haired, woolly faced country boy looking down on his frail little short ass. Loudmouth got very humble, very polite, and paid his bill and left.

The waitresses swarmed Big Boy and thanked him for speaking up. They asked where we were from, why we were in town and how long we planned to stay. We were staying just one more night. They told us to come back the next night, they'd save us the best table in the house and everything would be on the house. Seems they had had trouble with Loudmouth before. Man, I've never been treated better than we were treated the next night.

Another little story for you.

Back when I managed a store in Delray Beach FL (US1 & SW 10th, next to Crabby Jack's) I was filling-in when a waiter come to me and say a customer had just finished his steak and would soon be complaining about it as he did every Sunday morning. I instructed the waiter to retrieve the plate and bring it to me behind the register.

The ol' bastard came to me and on cue began complaining. I asked why he didn't ask to have it re-cooked and he replied he was too hungry to wait. I then pulled the plate from under the counter and told him it couldn't be that bad as he ate the entire thing.

"Well, I was hungry."

"Sir, you sucked the marrow out of the bone."

"I'll never eat here again!"

"Apparently you never pay so I'm wondering what it is you expect to hold against me."

He paid and left, never to return.

Now, I had legitimate complaints from time to time and I've taken care of them up to and including cooking exclusively for certain customers but an asshole is an asshole and I see no motive, profit or otherwise, in coddling them.

Dear Mister Egan,

Might I suggest for future reference, you cart your fat miserable ass over to the nearest Golden Corral when you want a meal with enough portions to satisfy even your gluttonous ****ing ass?  Be a lot cheaper, too.

Found this little tidbit from the DailyMail:

I did it for the children

has also emerged that Mr Egan was the subject of an exam cheating investigation in 2000.

The former Bronx middle school teacher was accused of leaving test answers visible on his desk for pupils to copy, telling students to re-check wrong answers and even offering others hints to help with the answers.

The paper reported that Mr Egan did not cooperate with the investigation and allegedly admitted to an angry parent that he was 'only helping the kids', approaching only those who raised their hands.
