Kyl to announce retirement

U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl will announce Thursday morning that he will not seek a fourth term in 2012, a source has confirmed to The Arizona Republic.

Kyl, 68, the Senate Republican whip and one of the highest-profile Capitol Hill critics of President Barack Obama's agenda, will make the stunning announcement at a quickly convened news conference in Phoenix.

A decision had been expected for weeks, as speculation swirled in Washington and Arizona about whether the No. 2 Senate Republican would retire or run again. But while some took Kyl's reluctance to discuss his future plans as a sign he was considering retirement, most local GOP insiders were expecting him to launch a new campaign. A statewide poll released last week showed Kyl positioned to easily defeat a number of hypothetical Democratic challengers, including former Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano.

Now if only Juan McLame would follow suit.

Boortz was talking about getting Sheriff Joe to run for Kyl's seat. I like it...

Three-term Sen. Jon Kyl announced Thursday he is retiring from Congress at the end of his term next year.

The Arizona lawmaker, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, is the fifth senator scheduled for re-election next year to announce a departure from Congress when the 113th convenes in 2013.

"This is the time to end my public service, in January 2013, and therefore, I will not seek reelection to the U.S. Senate," said Kyl, who was speaking from Phoenix with his wife by his side.

Damn.  Kyl wasn't perfect, but he was a damned good counterweight to the moonbat in RINOs clothing.

Radio talk show host Neal Boortz is promoting the idea.
