Woman who killed 8 babies gets 15-year term
« on: April 07, 2008, 04:23:12 PM »

Quote
FRANKFURT AN DER ODER, Germany - A German woman convicted of killing eight of her babies must serve the maximum 15 years in prison, a court ruled Monday.

Sabine Hilschenz, 42, was convicted in 2006 of killing eight of her newborn babies and burying them in flower pots and a fish tank in the garden of her parents' home near the German-Polish border.

The eight children were born between 1992 and 1998. Hilschenz also was suspected in the death of a ninth child in 1988, but the statute of limitations did not allow for that case to be tried.
... Hilschenz declined to testify at her original trial but said at a hearing this year that she had a serious problem with alcohol in the years when the children were born and could not remember how they died.

Her defense attorney had asked for a revised sentence of less than 10 years in prison.

This was an appeal case.  I am shocked that the maximum she could have got was only 15 years.

Legal systems work very differantly.

A guy I used to be stationed with got stationed in Germany.  Got nailed by the UCMJ for having "carnal relations" with 2 of his co-workers (one was another guy), at work.  At the same time, German police raided his home, and discovered a huge cache of child porn and attempts to seduce children over the internet.  The US Military could not use any of that though, due to legal issues.

He still got something like 5 years in a federal pen though.  And you can bet word of his "other crimes" met him there.

15 years just doesn't seem right. Not at all.
I can see November 2 from my house!!!

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

how is it that no one noticed babies repeatedly going missing?  neighbors . . . friends . . . family?

This would have been in the former East Germany I suspect people were well trained not to 'notice' things.

I thought the wall came down in 89, but yeah, I am sure that had a lot to do with it.
