Tea Party congressman clashes over Islam at town hall

Boynton Beach, Florida (CNN) -- Freshman Republican Congressman Allen West clashed with an advocate for Muslim-American civil rights at a sometimes-rowdy town hall meeting Monday night.

The tense exchange drew boos from a standing room only, largely Republican crowd.

The confrontation came as West, an Iraq War veteran who was backed by the Tea Party in last November's election, took questions from constituents. Nezar Hamze, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Miami, stepped to the microphone and accused West of making anti-Muslim comments in the past.

"Me and my children choose to follow the faith of Islam. You consistently insult it. How can we expect you to defend our right and practice Islam as far as the Constitution is concerned?" Hamze asked. snip

West's comments on Islam have stirred controversy in the past. He recently said Muslim Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minnesota, represents "the antithesis of the principles upon which this country was established."

I take it that the people at the DU didn't read the entire article? because they missed this:

"I will always defend your right to practice a free religion under the First Amendment," West said. "But what you must understand, if I am speaking the truth, I am not going to stop speaking the truth. The truth is not subjective," he continued to loud applause.

They also failed to note that CNN really had nothing big in that article at all, just a bunch of talking points.

He was questioning an Iragi republican guard soldier who knew where ambushes were being planned for West's troops. He was not getting any answers from the RG soldier. Colonel West then ordered all other personnel out of the interrogation area. When alone with the RG soldier he took out his pistol, put it between the RG's legs and shot. He then told the RG that the next one would not miss. The RG sang giving all the ambush positions that West's troops then mopped up with no casualties. West then went and turned himself in for violating the UCMJ. He said it was worth losing his career over not losing the men entrusted to him.

The man did the right thing in a bad situation and then took the heat by himself for that action.  That is so anti-DUchaebag there are not words to express it.

Not entirely true, but close.  It was not an Iraqi RG soldier, the individual was an Iraqi policeman, his involvement with the local jihadis is accurate.  After the man had been interrogated several hours without breaking, Colonel West had the man taken outside.  There he brandished his M9 and questioned the man again.  When the Iraqi policeman still declined,  Colonel West fired a shot in the air.  The Iraqi policeman declined to answer again at which point Colonel West fired a round passed the man's head, at which point he began cooperating.  This action did result in the breaking of the local Jihadi network and saved the lives of his troops and civilian Iraqis.

Colonel West has stated that his actions were wrong and he believes that continued interrogation would have gotten the man to talk.  He said that he acted in frustration and that cost him his military career.

He made a mistake I would have made.

That he is an American who loves his country and risked his life in his service while having dark skin is what drives the DUmpmonkies nuts.  There isn't a one of them fit to polish the man's shoes.
