Detroit cuts funding for homeless warming centers

Budget cuts carried out on the quiet have prevented emergency warming centers in Detroit from opening their doors all winter, leaving thousands of homeless and poor residents in the bitter cold. Homeless advocates were given little notice that the city had eliminated all funding to operate the single remaining warming center, Operation Get Down, on Detroit’s east side.

A decade ago, Detroit operated three warming centers, funded with $500,000. This already slim budget has been chopped away over the past few years, forcing closure and consolidation of services. At the same time, homelessness has swelled and thousands of other Detroit residents suffer without gas and electricity in the winter months. Last year, the city provided only $182,000 to Operation Get Down. In June 2010, the homeless aid was among $115 million cut from the city budget.

“The city doesn’t get it,” Reggie Huff, director at Tumaini, told the Detroit News in an interview January 27. “It really is a city’s responsibility to make sure their residents have a warm bed and place to stay.”

Shenetta Coleman, director of the city’s Human Service Department, disagreed in a statement this week. “It was intended to be a safety net,” she said, calling city-funded warming centers “a nice extra to have.” Coleman personally declined to request funding for warming centers in the 2010-2011 budget.

1. Another national disgrace. Shame on America. n/t

Sounds more like a Detroit disgrace not a national one.

What needs to happen in Detroit is we need to throw out the Repukes running the place and put in some nice Democratic people. Oh wait.

I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

Yeah, Freeper, sir, that was my thought too, just when I started reading this.

We've got to do something about the corrupt Republican political machine that's enslaved Detroit for generations.

Well, that's one way to make them move. Yeah, they should move away from those mean republicans. California is the place they ought to be..... Movie stars, swimming pools.....

Born and raised in a suburb just north of Detroit, and left Michigan in 1985

A quick history of Detroit's Mayors in my lifetime;

Only three Republicans, and since 1962 EVERY Mayor has been Democratic.

1962 Jerry Cavanagh D
Roman Gribbs D
Coleman Young D -  sometimes referred to as [street smart] Mayor for 20 years
Dennis Archer D
Kwame Kilpatrick D  - Sent to Prison
Kenneth Cockrel Jr. D  - Served remainder of Kilparick's term
Dave Bing  D  - Former Detroit Piston's Basketball player

Couple this to the fact that as is well known Michigan and especially Detroit is a Union run state and city, is it any wonder they are in such deep trouble.
At least when I lived there one in four households had 'breadwinners' working in some way for the auto manufactures.  Starting salaries about $25.00 per hour, plus full benefits.
While I still lived there in the 70's and the last 'recession' [you remember - the Carter years] - on average EVERY fifth house had a major breadwinner out of work - [20%+ unemployement].
I wonder who is the cause?

Wonder how much of that $500,000 actually went to heat anything?

Lets see, even if the average dwelling had a $1000/month heating bill, they could heat 500, 2,000 sq ft homes. That would amount to 1 million sq ft! Just how many homeless do y'all have in that rat hole?

To put this in perspective for you DUmmies, It's the equivalent of 22 football fields!!!!

Hey DUmmies, you do know that tax payers do pay a lot for funds like that, right?!?
Well,.....let me ask you how that unemployment is doing in that state. (I wonder if that "stimulus" bill has helped any? Odd isn't it?) With all those people being unemployed, the amount they pay in taxes is TINY compared to what they are when they were working.

They're frickin' homeless, there isn't anything making them stay in America's Northern Tier.  They should all migrate to the sunny and generous climes of SF and Berzerkely.

No, you mouth-breathing parasite, it isn't.  Religious based charities and local churches do this sort of thing on donations, not from wealth taken at gunpoint!

That one sentence is the best summation of what is wrong with Detroit, and the rest of the big blue shitholes, that I have ever read.  I doubt the commie who spoke it is close to aware of what he really said.

It's so damned expensive for the taxpayers of Detroit because they pay to warm the bums in the winter, and cool them down in the summer. If they could simply reschedule those services, running warming centers in the summer, and cooling centers in winter, they could save a fortune in fuel costs. Anyway, you'd think a city run by environmental wacko democrats would have thought of that. It's a green approach to the problem.

I can solve their problem with less than half the ****in' money they're wastin'!!!!

Buy 'em all tickets to sunny Kalifornica! Problem solved! Arnold and his fellow libs would be happy to have 'em! Set camps up right outside Boxer's and Pelosi's mansions! I'm sure they would invite 'em in to use the services! At least that's what they say they want the rest of us to do!
