The Useful (but Weird or Hilarious) Invention Thread
« on: January 20, 2011, 11:21:53 AM »
I ran across this bit of information sort of by accident and I could barely stop laughing enough to create this post.

Chester "Buck" Weimer, of Pueblo, CO, is an inventor. Having suffered for many years as a victim of flatus attacks propogated by his wife Arlene, Buck was lying in bed one night after a particularly violent session (Arlene suffers from Crohn's Disease, apparently), suffering in silence when the light bulb went on.

Fart-knocker knickers.

Yep, good ol' Buck put together a pair of boxers and a pair of panties that featured a charcoal filter element and a trade-secret laminate that featured Australian sheep's wool, had a textile manufacturer make up 750 pairs, and within a few months had to reorder. The fart knickers were a hit! In 2006, Buck was selling 8,000 pair a month. The fartproof knickers sell for $24.95 a pair, with replacement filters going for $9.95. The underwear itself lasts about a year, depending on the laundering cycle and the filters last from several weeks to several months, depending on the intensity of the wearer's farts.

Buck won the Ig Nobel Prize for Biology in 2001 for his invention.
