today's the 10th anniversary of Skins's island
« on: January 20, 2011, 05:10:03 AM »
My, my, how tempus does fugit.

Ten years ago on this date, my fellow alum Skins waded ashore Skins's island and planted the flag of gripery, whinery, bitchery, intolerance, bigotry, anger, rage, bitterness, and hate, claiming the real-estate on behalf of the Establishment Democrats who, concerned for the future of their party, saw a need to keep the fringe elements, the oddities, the freaks, among themselves out of the public eye, lest they cause the Democrats to lose votes.

It was a great idea, Skins's island; and has worked to some extent.  There are still members of the general public who to this day suppose the Democrat party is merely the main competition to the Republican party; that they're both pretty much mainstream.  That's because those people don't see this side of the Democrats, the more-unattractive elements being hidden away on Skins's island.

franksolich became acquainted with Skins's island purely by chance, and on the first day it was established.

I was living in Omaha at the time, and had all the accoutrements of the standard life-style, including cable television.  I don't do television myself, but being a nice guy, as friends were always dropping by, I provided it as a diversion, an amusement, for them.

On January 20, 2001, I as usual was not paying attention to the television, instead being in another room playing around on the internet.  No one was visiting me, but I had the television in the living room on, so as to catch glimpses of the inauguration as I went to-and-from the other room to the kitchen, to replenish the coffee.

franksolich drinks a lot of coffee, and so such trips were numerous.

I was concerned mostly about assassination attempts by the fringe left, because their own candidate had tried to steal Florida and failed.  There was an aura of hate and rage in the atmosphere, and if something happened, I wanted to know about it right away, rather than waiting to be told later about it by someone else.

Fortunately, nothing happened, and we were destined to enjoy eight years of unrelenting prosperity.  (Only six years, actually, until the Democrats took control of Congress in January 2007, but generally, eight years.)

During one of my trips to the kitchen--it was from the kitchen back to the computer--the cameras of C-Span zoomed in on something that stopped me in my tracks.

It was just a few seconds, but time enough to spot my fellow alum Skins and his cohort, Lord Marblehead EarlG, in the crowd watching the parade, holding up a banner advertising Skins's island.

If I had been a few seconds earlier or a few seconds later, I would've missed the sight.

I took note of the "democraticunderground.com" address, and later on checked it out.

When did you first become acquainted with Skins's island, and under what conditions?

I became aware of DU when I subscribed to PJ's DUmmie Funnies. It's been a laugh riot ever since. Happy Anniversary!

I first become familliar with Skin's Island when I became a registered member of the Conservative Cave, and I will never forgive any of you.  :rotf:

Seriously though, it's been a fun, disturbing, and sometimes scary ride here in the DUmp. I have to say...really...this may well be my favorite place here at CC.

I was late to the cyber world and didn`t have a computer until Jan 04.
As the election season wore on I would go to Drudge and link to editorials and blogs that he provides and from one of those links posts from DU would be printed.
It was some of the most hateful and vicious stuff I had ever seen.
In Sept of that year I joined FR and from there read the DUmmie FUnnies to become more acquainted with the sub human spawn that wandered the island.

Neal Boortz mentioned the banner for DUmmyland on his website so I got there the day after they opened their doors.
I may not lock my doors while sitting at a red light and a black man is near, but I sure as hell grab on tight to my wallet when any democrats are close by.

Here's my path (to CC):  DrudgeReport > Free Republic > DUmmie Funnies > Conservative Cave

I stumbled into the 'pitt' of DU about the same time I found PJ's site and was really horrified by the hate & intolerance on display. So, I was very happy to find DUmmie Funnies and CC who show the DUmmies as they really are: a bunch of impotent, angry children who are very deserving of all the fun that's poked at them!

I became aquainted with the DUmmie's by the way of Google.  It was '04 I think and I was looking for info on how things in the debate were going or something like that and found DU.  Kept trying to read between the lines and get away from the spin.  On one of the threads, someone had mentioned CU and I went there and loved it.  I think it was right after CU opened, or shortly after that.  It was fun to poke fun at the mental midgets of DU. Then when CU had a major software meltdown I noticed a post about CC and here I am.

10 years of pure of humor, stupidity, sympathy for terrorists and longing for an American Stalin and gulags for counterrevolutionaries. Happy birthday DU!

I first learned about it in 2004 when I started posting on FR and ran into DUmmie FUnnies.

Thanks frank for the PM about this thread, for some reason I can't get into the "celebration" :( that website just seems to represent the lower standards of American life.

I first discovered DU when I found our old home back in 2004.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

I discovered DU relatively early because of Free Republic.  I remember going over there and posting some story where Chelsea Clinton had made some relatively conservative remarks and was banned within 3 posts.

Later, after the grave dancing in the wake of 9/11/2001 I stopped going over there until DUmmies FUnnies and CU and CC.

I did submit my George Romero political zombie movie theory to the hate mail address but I don't know if it ever got printed.

Ooh, scary.  That was my path, too.  I think it was Gobucks posting in a DUmmie FUnnies thread alerting me to the fact that DUmmies are lampooned here all the time, that I finally made my way over here.

It was only rumor to me.  Reports at FR, yet I never ventured to the actual site until a few weeks ago when I washed ashore here.  I tred, tredded, trode, lightly 3 times to actually read what was there.  I was amazed they had the ability to string together crude sentences of incoherent thought or were they only mimicking human communication?
I will continue to monitor from a distance and rely upon the witness of others.  Godspeed and fare the well, travelers!

10 years huh?....and the DUmmies are still counting Florida votes.

Oh hell, sir.

The primitives are still fuming over the Hayes-Tilden controversy, but there they have a reason to, as it's the only presidential theft in American history by Republicans.

I became aware of DU in a "Legal and Political" section on a gun board (The High Road) in 03. Ben Ezra, a mod at THR is still a steady poster at DU. He's no mole either. He's a proud North Carolina democrat. He uses same name.

I registered and got TS's after my 2nd post. It was nothing major. Just some little quip about the UN should be kicked out of the US.

I found CU as a result of reading DU. Timing had to be just right.

Yeah, I submit CC every once in a while at HotAir. No doubt some of our new members come from there. I recognize some of the "handles" they go by.

Am a little surprised we haven't run into some of the trolls.

I started out along with Coach at FR and the Viking Kitty patrol. Went to CU first and then here as CU had a meltdown durin' the Ron Paul fiasco and gator's insentient Jew bashin'. The guy really does have a problem with that!

Besides, HotAir and FR think cussin' is against the rules. How the hell do ya talk politics without four letter words??? Damned if I ****in' know! ( snicker! )
