Actually, it's been going on longer than six months. All of Mexico's woes are being blamed on the US, regardless of the fact that this is majorly untrue. There have been assertions that the weapons that are in Mexico are due to the US. While this is partly true (yes, there has been some gun smuggling), the majority of the weapons were sold to the Mexican army. In turn, the Mexican army members sold many of them on the black market.
Agreed.
My dad has a subscription to the NRA, so I took a gander at one of the articles a couple years ago when the drug cartels were hot and really getting into small skirmishes with the Mexican authorities, whether it be feds, local police, or military. This particular article was discussing a small town on the Mexican border, versus it's neighboring U.S. town a few miles away and the great differences each had. I sure wish I remember the name of that town...
The one in Texas is El Paso, and what makes the story so interesting is both sides.
El Paso has very little gun control laws, while the town in Mexico has a heavy gun control law that forbids about anyone from having a weapon. Guess which town is actually safest? El Paso. El Paso actually had a record of not having any murders or incidents with a gun, from what I can recall, for a number of years it was so good.
Your explanation is right. Only a small percentage of the weapons that are there are smuggled from here. And I'd argue that those weapons that are smuggled there, are not here legally to begin with. I'd have to also say that you are right, and some weapons were sold to the Mexican government, but as we all know, the Mexican government is HIGHLY corrupt, arguably one of the most corrupt in the world. It would be safe to assume that some Mexican authorities actually sell weapons illegally to criminals because of their corrupted ways which is also what you pointed out.
My whole point though, was that this guy is actually insane to actually say that you can walk into any American gun shop and buy an RPG. To my knowledge, I don't even think that fully automatic weapons are purchasable anymore in any state and most of the criminals down south of the border seem to use fully automatic weapons.
It's quite hypocritical to just assume that we are to blame for these criminals getting guns and us as the citizens be punished.
Our media is just getting stupider and stupider. And I was shocked when the Mexican President blamed US...US...for their drug cartel problem...
